GENERAL SUMMARY / OVERVIEW:

Responsible for providing operational and strategic leadership, direction and coordination for all MGB's planning, design and construction activities including all renovations, modernizations and expansion projects and other anticipated major capital and new construction initiatives as approved. Clearly define and manage the overall structure, team and processes needed to successfully execute the annual capital cycle and capital program and assure all enterprise objectives are met. Manage the building information modeling (BIM) technology, space data, and real estate portfolio. Coordinate the management activities of all Real Estate operations and transactions.

The Vice-President oversees a department of approximately 20-30 employees and contractors who lead and manage 120 to 150 capital projects and 25-50 feasibility studies annually. The span of control scope encompasses two hospitals and multiple off campus locations including owned and leased spaces

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General

  • The Vice-President is responsible for the main functional areas which include; Master Planning, Facilities Planning, Design and Construction Project Management, Real Estate Portfolio Management, Building Information Modeling & FM data systems
  • Uses the MGB values to govern decisions, actions and behaviors.   • Creates an environment where direct reports and their teams can thrive in their personal learning and development in support of their current or future roles for MGB and the MGB mission.
  • Makes all decisions in the context of the long-term value basis for MGB and the MGB mission to drive value for many years of institutional benefit and future flexibility
  • Eliminate non-value-added processes (waste) at every opportunity and scale
  • Lead a multi-disciplinary team of project coordinators, project managers, senior project managers, real estate professionals, facilities planners and administrative staff. Continuously improve and implement process refinements to the project management services organization to meet the department and organizational goals while increasing the effectiveness of the teams
  • Continuously improve the organizational structure and operating processes for the managed teams to ensure closer coordination and mutual support of the Facilities Engineering & Energy teams
  • Establish a highly effective working relationship with BWH's Senior Vice President of Real Estate, Facilities and Operations, and all other members of the BWH and MGB executive team
  • Establish a close and collaborative working relationship with key departments including Environmental health & Safety, Environmental and Linen Services, Finance, Supply Chain Management, Nursing, and Legal, and Information Services Departments
  • Represent the Hospital to outside agencies, industry associations and peer organizations
  • Create and manage all budgets and budgetary functions for the Real Estate and Project Management departments
  • Other duties as assigned

Construction Administration & Project Management
  • Ensure the successful execution and completion of all MGB's projects at the right scope, right quality on time and on budget. Ensure a high level of customer/user communication, participation and satisfaction consistent with organizational goals within a complex institutional environment with multiple objectives and stakeholders remaining within cost, schedule and quality guardrails
  • Successfully develop a high-performing Team that includes other support departments, and which deliver timely, accurate and meaningful project management and construction management expertise to key users and stakeholders across MGB and externally
  • Manage the change process to prevent scope creep and track sources of changes in construction cost or time and implement the change management program defined at the MGB level
  • Establishes a systematic fair and inclusive consultant and contractor selection process for all budgeted capital improvement projects

Planning and Design
  • Ensure that all projects are properly planned, designed and constructed to meet MGB's objectives
  • Ensure that project scope is clearly defined and conceptually signed off by users BEFORE budgets and schedules are assigned and approved
  • Apply best in class thinking to the design process to explore appropriately best practices in the design of the built environment supporting thought leadership in Healthcare Design
  • Coordinate all design efforts with reliability and redundancy goals and the engineering teams

Space Management
  • Provide or delegate staff function for Capital and Space management governance structures.
  • Support the developing and implementing hospital master plan activities to meet the strategic objectives as defined by hospital administration
  • Establishes the development and implementation of hospital-wide standard specifications for finishes, lighting and furniture
  • Establishes standards for and responses to inquiries pertaining to space utilization, code issues, square footages, cost estimates and finishes
  • Provide the staff function for adjudication of space management

Real Estate Portfolio Management
  • Develop a systematic and predictive model of real estate portfolio management to ensure lease renewals are performed timely and rents paid both and a landlord and tenant. Ensure the portfolio of spaces are aligned with enterprise goals and managed at a cost point aligned with market pricing


Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

B.S. Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering or Architecture. M.S. Degree in Engineering, or Master of Architecture or MBA or relevant field. Architect or Engineer Professional license is strongly preferred - significant progressive experience in similar roles with an Academic Medical Center will be considered
  • A minimum of ten (10) years progressive experience in the design/management of complex institutional healthcare and/or research with new construction and renovation projects
  • A leader with significant management experience overseeing major facility planning, design, construction and real estate projects including major new construction ($50-$100M) and facility redevelopment activities, in a complex healthcare or institutional research organizations
  • Significant and varied expertise in major institutional facility construction management, development, planning and design - academic medical centers preferred
  • Familiarity with FM database development, space management software, CADD and/or GIS
  • Significant executive level experience managing architectural design, engineering, computer-aided design and construction management activities
  • Experience working collaboratively with Finance and Legal colleagues, Operations and Information Technology colleagues on large-scale healthcare and research construction management projects
  • Significant experience in managing or leading a substantial real estate portfolio of institutional space greater than 1 million rentable s.f. and in multiple physical locations preferred
  • Hospital and/or academic medical center design and project management experience preferred
  • Familiarity with mission, goals and operations of healthcare institutions

SKILLS / ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:
  • Very strong interpersonal and communication skills necessary to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with and between other architects, project managers, department heads, administrators, consultants and contractors
  • Analytical skills necessary to evaluate data and proposals, develop project ideas and conduct feasibility studies effectively - willing to take 'reasoned risks' after intelligent reviews and planning on key initiatives. Not risk averse, an ability to pay close attention to detail while simultaneously responding to urgent requests and managing competing and conflicting priorities
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with an ability to take initiative, work independently
  • Advanced computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project or equivalent scheduling software, project management software experience a plus
  • Strong teamwork and management and/or supervisory skills
  • Conceptual strategic thinker" with an ability to bring concepts to reality
  • Understands the tripartite mission of an academic medical center and system of care, teaching, and research. Able to work within the organizational dynamics of a large healthcare system
