VCA PetCare East Veterinary Hospital is a small animal practice in Santa Rosa, California.

Job Summary:

Serve as an assistant to all Animal Health Technicians in all of PetCare's nursing departments, representing PetCare's Mission and Core Values.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Must be friendly, outgoing, "people-oriented" and have above average communication skills. Ability to work in a team oriented environment. Well groomed, organized, and detail oriented. Ability to take direction. Ability to handle patients compassionately and safely. Must possess sound decision making skills and multi-task while working in an environment with stress.

Physical Requirements:

● Must be able to lift 40 lbs. several times per day

●Repetitive use of upper body including extremities continuously during a minimum 10 hour day

● Must be able to walk, bend, stand and reach continuously during a minimum 10 hour day

● Visual acuity sufficient to maintain accurate medical records

● Understand written and spoken directions

●Fine motor skills adequate for using common hospital equipment such as: electric clippers, syringes, radiology equipment, laboratory equipment, etc.

● Must be able to work long or irregular hours under pressure conditions

● Dependable attendance is required

● Prescribed medication must not impair function or ability to fulfill the requirements of the job

Education and Experience:

High school diploma. Must have experience working with the public. Experience in a veterinary hospital or other doctors' office is a plus.

Duties:

The following is a list of essential job requirements. This list may be revised at any time and additional duties not listed here may be assigned as needed. Job functions and job responsibility include:

Client service Maintenance/housekeeping

●Have a complete understanding of the principles of disinfection and sterilization

●Be proficient in all forms of restraint for dogs and cats and have thorough understanding of animal behavior

Assist in all nursing departments as needed

Procedure/Receiving/Laboratory

● perform TPR/MM/CRT

● enter patients into x-ray computer

● assist in taking radiographs

● set up for general procedures:

● eye exam

● ear exams

● rectal exam

● make E-collars

● enter callbacks

● submit blood work to Antech/Idexx

● properly fill, spin and (possibly) read pcv tubes

● perform all snap tests

● stain slides

● use and clean refractometer

● handle, label, and order outside lab samples

● run all laboratory diagnostic equipment

● check in clients and obtain short history on general appts.

Treatment

● walk patients (non ortho)

● run in-house blood work

● change beds

● assist in minor treatments (assisted care patients)

● restraint for IVC care, etc.

● clean cages Surgery

● set up and tear down soft tissue

● clean/disinfect surgery room

● clean/sterilize instruments

Emergency set up for:

● unblocking

● laceration repair levels 1-3

● abscess repairs

● enema administration

● critical transfer

● urinary catheter placement and maintenance

● bandaging/splinting set ups

● treatment sheet- what is needed to admit a patient

● IVF

● IVC

● O2cage

●Cardell usage

●proper cage protocol/set up

● emergency drug sheet

●set-up O2 machine
