Position Title: Trades/Maintenance Specialist - Structural

Department: Maintenance & Security

Rate of Pay: Non-Exempt - B21 - B23  $17.90/hr - $20.19/hr  

Closed Date: June 3, 2022, 5:00 PM Arizona Time

Position Summary:

The Trades Maintenance Specialist, Structural Systems performs journey- level work in the fabrication, installation, maintenance, replacement, and repairs to structures, components, and systems of College facilities and equipment, as well as other general maintenance tasks.

The work schedule for this position is flexible and may include working evenings, weekends, rotating on-call with 24-hour availability and local travel.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair to College facilities and equipment, with focus on structural systems, such as: install, repair, and replace walls, flooring, ceilings and roofing on buildings
  • Perform framing construction including steel stud and lumber
  • Installation of drywall including hanging, taping, application of joint compound and texturing as well as drywall repairs
  • Perform demolition for remodels
  • Lay a variety of floors, including wood, vinyl, ceramic, and concrete
  • Install, remove and repair doors, both metal and wood, to include hardware installation
  • Perform cabinet fabrication and installation including lamination
  • Install remove and repair windows, to include hardware installation
  • Perform all aspects of roofing including, installing and repairing roof drains, counter flashings, and pitch pockets, as well as installing and repairing shingles and tile on roofs
  • Cleaning, coating and repairing roofs including sealing air conditioning ducts on external air conditioning and other ventilation units
  • Perform repair and maintenance tasks in other areas, such as paint, roof and lock, as part of a team
  • Participate in cross training programs with other operations and maintenance staff
  • Repair commercial facilities
  • Respond to customer concerns and emergency calls and pages for repair on a 24-hour basis, including being subject to callbacks and serving on a rotating on-call roster
  • Estimate time and materials for assigned area
  • Assist with inventory of supplies and equipment to ensure adequate stock and functionality are maintained
  • Inspect facilities, systems, and fixtures and ensure periodic servicing if necessary
  • Maintain and clean equipment
  • Use safe work practices and procedures
  • Perform data entry input on computerized management system as required
  • Provide effective customer service
  • Operate appropriate motor vehicles
  • Follow applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, and regulations
  • Perform heavy labor, such as moving equipment or furniture; use safe work practices and procedures, to include proper lifting and carrying methods, and the proper use of hand and power equipment, tools, and supplies
  • Use computers and applicable software, including facilities and maintenance software, word processing, databases, email, and calendaring
  • Communicate clearly both orally and in writing sufficient to receive and convey instructions to perform the duties of the job
  • Function as a team member, to include cross training with other operations and maintenance staff
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
  • High School Diploma, or General Equivalency Degree and
  • Completion of an approved vocational/apprenticeship program and
  • Possession of a valid Arizona Driver's License or the ability to obtain one by the first day of employment and demonstration of an acceptable driving record and
  • Two years skilled-level trades experience for assignment in B21
or
  • High School Diploma, or General Equivalency Degree and
  • Completion of an approved vocational/apprenticeship program and
  • Possession of a valid Arizona Driver's License or the ability to obtain one by the first day of employment and demonstration of an acceptable driving record and
  • Three years journey-level trades experience for an assignment in a single skill for assignment in B22
or
  • High School Diploma, or General Equivalency Degree and
  • Completion of an approved vocational/apprenticeship program and
  • Possession of a valid Arizona Driver's License or the ability to obtain one by the first day of employment and demonstration of an acceptable driving record and
  • Four years journey-level trades experience in a single skill and demonstrate knowledge, skills, or abilities in another skill not associated with the primary skill for assignment at B23
or
  • Candidates who possess similar minimum objective qualifications should describe in detail the education and work experience you regard as establishing the equivalency.
Additional Information:
  • Successful candidates must meet minimum medical testing requirements, as determined in a physical examination prior to employment

  • Basic inventory and record keeping
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of reports and records, including data entry
  • Use applicable tools and equipment related to area of assignment
  • Read blueprints, schematic drawings, and/or construction drawings
  • Principles of estimating job materials and work hours
  • Safe work practices, to include safe lifting and carrying methods
  • Troubleshoot systems related to area of assignment
  • Principles of superior customer service
  • Operate appropriate motor vehicles
  • Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, and demonstrate interpersonal skills with co-workers, supervisors, the college community, and the general public
Physical Requirements:
  • Positions in this class typically require: climbing, crawling, crouching, lifting, reaching, balancing, stooping, grasping, manual dexterity, kneeling, standing for prolonged periods, walking, pushing, pulling, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions
  • Heavy Work: Exerting force up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects including the human body
Incumbents may be working in areas with moving mechanical parts, electrified equipment, vibrations, fumes, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, extreme temperatures, low lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, extended periods on roofs and outdoors as well as travel.
