COMPANY OVERVIEW:

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION:

Tool crib attendant functions as a support service to facilitate a high level of efficiency in the machine shop. This is done by issuing tools to operators, monitoring inventories, collecting tools from work areas, and restocking tooling. They are also generally responsible for ensuring the safety of work areas, providing support for tool repairs, and maintaining accurate records of paperwork related to tooling.

Tool crib attendants typically manage tools in multiple work areas. In a normal workday, they check tool availability in each work area, calibrate tools as needed, maintain records and documentation in toolcrib software, and coordinate with members of the manufacturing team.

This position demands a good understanding of the different tools used in the plant, safe handling procedures of tools, and basic tool maintenance. Tool crib attendants must also be computer literate, physically able to be on their feet for most of the day and carry heavy objects and display basic math skills.

TECHNICAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintain safe operations by identifying safety risks and adhering to safety procedures, requirements, and regulations.
  • Tracks the supply and use of tools, fixturing, and equipment in the toolcrib and around the shop.
  • Prepares tooling, fixturing, equipment and material for CNC mills, lathes, mill-turns, and other equipment ahead of machine setup.
  • Issues required tooling, fixturing, equipment and ensures it is returned upon completion.
  • Delivers tooling, fixturing, equipment to workers.
  • Keeps accurate inventory of tooling and fixturing and stores them properly.
  • Inspect tools and fixtures to ensure good condition, and report those that are worn, damaged, lost, or unsafe to use.
  • Repairs and services tooling, fixturing, and equipment as required.
  • Responsible for acquiring quotes for tooling and fixturing from suppliers.
  • Minimizing costs while supporting the needs of manufacturing.
  • Responsible for notifying purchasing when items within toolcrib area need replenishment.

  • Supports and assists in maintaining 5S programs and culture, Continuous Improvement initiatives, and R.O.P.E. (Removing Obstacles and Promoting Engagement)
  • Read and understand drawings. When necessary, obtains help to interpret GD&T callouts and its application relative to part manufacture and inspection.
  • Maintaining the work area to be safe, clean, and organized, assisting 5S and/or general good housekeeping practices.
  • Follows supervisor's direction to troubleshoot problem processes, interfacing with Manufacturing Engineers if necessary.
  • Any additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one year CNC Milling / Turning experience in a job shop environment, preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES (KSAAS):

Knowledge
  • Ability to solve inspection problems as well as utilize experience to develop new approaches.
  • Must be able to correctly interpret drawings dimensions and views; also, obtain help for more complex GD&T callouts on the drawing.
  • Good understanding on how machine tooling works. (lathes and mills)
  • Good understanding in tools used for metal cutting (lathe and mill tools)
  • Good computer skills (Office 365 suite)

Analytical, Business and Technical
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as drawings and routers, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Must be able to communicate with co-workers and supervisor.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Must be able to read a drop indicator, vernier caliper, tape measure. Should be able to utilize the optical comparator and profilometer.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately orally, in writing or electronically.
  • Ability to communicate work goals, progress and changes as required.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 35. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
