Under the general direction of the Technical Director of the Vascular Laboratory, the Senior Vascular Technologist (SVT) will serve as a clinical expert and role model for all other technologists in the vascular lab. The SVT will facilitate all medical and nursing staff who are seeking urgent care studies in the Vascular Diagnostic Lab. It is the responsibility of the SVT, among many others, to initiate patient diagnostic testing by consulting with medical and nursing staff via telephone and to evaluate urgent needs for studies that are requested on a regular basis.

Performs technical and coordinating functions to assist in the management of the Vascular Laboratory and participates in, as well as, provides quality control for the Vascular Laboratory. Responsible for training and monitoring junior personnel in the performance of testing procedures.

Reports to the Technical Director, Vascular Lab, and in his/her absence, the Medical Director. The SVT provides technical and patient care aspects of the vascular laboratory in a responsible, compassionate and qualified manner. Is responsible for test results, preparation of data, preliminary report writing and transmission of said data to 360 Powerscribe software and ultimately CAS / EPIC structured reporting. In addition, in concordance with lab policies, the SVT will report urgent/emergent results to appropriate health care personnel.

Operates vascular laboratory equipment and performs all diagnostic procedures offered in the vascular lab. The SVT maintains pertinent records and statistical data at the behest of the Tech Director.

Shares this role with other Senior Vascular Technologists and is responsible for communicating any and all changes in operations, potential solutions to new problems, difficult cases and other operational processes that they may encounter.

Plays a major role in the coordinating and management of research trials that exist in the lab.

• Assists lab leadership with maintaining operational lab policies and procedures by participating in the monitoring and guidance of lab personnel.

• Has attained the level of technologist expert and transfers this knowledge onto subordinates and other lab personnel as necessary.

• Assists in the training of residents and fellows.

• Maintains optimum quality assurance in all aspects of patient care testing.

• In conjunction with the Technical Director, is certain that appropriate indications are present for the testing procedures ordered.

• Works in association with the Technical and Medical Directors to provide optimal test accuracy.

• Obtains brief history and relevant patient history, focused physical examination and reviews reasons for the testing to be performed, records these data and determines the appropriate testing to be performed.

• Explains procedures to patients to assure cooperation and optimum test results; positions patient.

• Conducts scanning procedures using ultrasound equipment; moves scanner over specified body area; makes hard copy images per IAC-VT (Intersocietal Accreditation Commission--Vascular Testing) protocol and laboratory policies and procedures.

• Selects appropriate transducer to optimize visualization, depending on depth of field, vessels to be identified, etc. Adjusts equipment to focus, positions patient to optimize testing results.

• Follows the protocol established for each test procedure. Performs arterial, venous, abdominal visceral, carotid and transcranial Doppler tests according to laboratory protocols; ensures safety and care of patients undergoing testing.

• Performs portable testing that includes bring portable ultrasound unit/physiologic (i,.e. plethysmograph) to in-patient floors.

• Performs Intra Operative testing as instructed.

• Records patient test data, compiles and assembles data, writes preliminary reports and provides this information to the physician / EPIC structured reporting/360 Powerscribe/CAS in a timely fashion.

• Assembles all necessary information and data for reviewing MD.

• Assists in the rescheduling of test if necessary when technical problems preclude adequate performance of test.

• Works with the Technical Director to maintain equipment. Participates in routine care, maintenance and calibration of Lab equipment. Participates in the collection and monitoring of equipment maintenance.

• Explains testing modalities to patients, families and other health team members as appropriate to assure cooperation and achieving of optimum test results.

• Coordinates and participates research projects that exist in the lab and trains staff in the requirements of each trial.

• Possess a global awareness of the daily schedule both for the individual as well as the entire staff and works to resolve inefficiencies and discrepancies.

• Performs new techniques and/or routines as necessitated by technological advances/changes or laboratory focus.

• Satisfactorily meets work performance expectations set forth by the lab's leadership.

• Under the direction/designation of the Technical Director or his/ her designee, participates on the rotating portable exam assignment each week.

• Participates in on-the-job training for staff, students and Fellows as assigned.

• Maintains a clean work area (i.e. clean counters, cabinets, machines, etc.)

• Participates in the preparation for the accreditation process under the direction of the Technical Director.

• Participates in any function deemed necessary for the smooth function of the laboratory. This includes, but is not limited to, filing, answering the telephone, covering the secretaries, photocopying, providing transport of patients as needed for comfort, safety or timely service, moving of equipment, stocking of supplies, unpacking and stocking supplies, etc.

• Implements precaution techniques, sterile techniques, etc. as needed.

• Rotates on-call schedule with other technologists as scheduled by the Technical Director or his/ her designee.

• Assists lab leadership in the creation and maintenance of policy and procedures that are in place to govern the care.

• Participates in and can be responsible for providing timely training programs that aid in the professional development of regular staff

• Participates in the evaluation of clinical and training staff as required for their annual or timely performance appraisals

• Participates and coordinates continuous quality improvement programs

• Completes patient charge documents in a timely and accurate manner and provides oversight to staff technologists for maintaining the quality of the charge documents that they complete.

• Coordinate support activity in the absence of the laboratory Technical Director.

• Provide ongoing competency assessment for vascular lab staff that enhances the Technical Director's existing quality management efforts.

Qualifications
• Must be certified by the ARDMS (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) as an RVT (Registered Vascular Technologist) or an RVS (Registered Vascular Technologist)

• Minimum of 3-5 years of related diagnostic ultrasound experience.

• Possess AHA BLS certification
