The Ann Romney Center for Neurologic Diseases is seeking to hire a highly motivated Technical Research Assistant I (TRAI) with molecular experience, cell culture experience, strong organizational skills, and the ability to attain a high degree of independence in a new and dynamic research environment. Working in the lab of Dan Hu, the TRAI will investigate the immune system in human diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. The TRAI will execute protocols involving a variety of routine and non-routine experiments at a professional level, including but not exclusively involving cell culture, cell isolation and analysis, RNA extraction, qPCR, sequencing, CyTOF, histology, and microscopy. The TRAI will record experimental results in an orderly fashion and maintains accurate laboratory notes as well as maintain laboratory supplies.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine and non-routine tests following established methodologies in the field of cellular and molecular biology for the human immune system. Experiments may include but are not limited to processing and freezing biologic specimens from humans, maintaining tissue cultures, and preparing radioactive and non-radioactive samples for gene and protein expression analyses, such as cell sorting, cytotoxicity assay, CyTOF, ELISA, Western blot, qPCR, RNA-seq, single-cell multi-omics, etc.
  • Records data, and summarizes and analyzes results using basic statistics.
  • Prepares laboratory reagents, chemicals, instruments, and equipment. Assists with cleaning, and maintaining the laboratory area in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Maintains supplies inventory in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Conducts literature searches, compiles information from journals and suggests uses of new techniques of research and laboratory techniques.
  • Discusses progress of work regularly with the supervisor.
  • Attends courses in safety procedures for the handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous, infectious, radioactive and toxic substances, ensuring that all laboratory activities are carried out in compliance with such procedures.
  • All other duties, as assigned.


Qualifications
  • BS in a biological/physical science with hands-on experience in any biology field required. Should have previous experience of working in a research lab and familiarity with basic laboratory instruments, equipment, and scientific procedures.
  • Must have at least one-year experience in a setting directly related to research.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  • Must have a sound understanding of laboratory practices and procedures, usually acquired through one to three months of on-the-job training.
  • Ability to manage work processes in a neat and orderly way, to follow instructions, and to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work with attention to detail and punctuality.
  • On own initiative, ability to identify potential problems and troubleshoot problems as necessary.
  • Must have good manual dexterity and be able to carry items weighing up to 30 lbs.
  • Position may at times require the employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials are present.
  • Good organizational and record-keeping skills, detail-oriented.
  • Good interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism.
  • Sound degree of computer literacy.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Will be working in a research lab. Lab maintenance and operating-related light-weight lifting and bending will be needed.
  • Position may at times require the employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials are present.
