Mitsubishi Electric Power Products (MEPPI) serves the North American power systems, rail transportation, and large visual display markets with electrical and electronic products, systems and services. Our Electrical Distribution Division (EDD) is seeking a Systems Engineer II - Power Electronics Engineer to join our team! You will bring your passion and knowledge for power electronics system engineering to aid in the ongoing development of our engineering team. Our Volt/Var Solutions (VVC) engineering team is responsible for developing power electronics systems to enhance and solve power quality issues on the distribution grid.
POSITION SUMMARY

Perform and support VVC Solutions power electronic system design, equipment design and rating, and system configuration, including factory test and commissioning test, development, technical consultation, and leadership for power electronics-based products. Collaborate and support sales and engineering staff in proper power electronics design and equipment application.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform design studies for Volt Var Controls (VVC) Solutions systems, such as system rating design, control mode selection, solution simulation and modeling, and control performance analysis. Direct and review technical studies performed by other departments and outside services.
  • Design and implement power electronics protection and control systems, including system control performance analysis to meet customer specifications.
  • Develop equipment and system design specifications using customer specifications and input to ensure the designs meet all performance and customer requirements.
  • Design, develop and coordinate multiple components and systems of distribution power electronics projects. Coordinate same for external design contractors and engineering consultants.
  • Assure resolution of all customer and supplier technical questions. Provide field problem troubleshooting and resolution of existing equipment.
  • Design, implement and verify Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) logic and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software to monitor and control VVC Solutions products and distribution substation systems.
  • Assist with developing and implementing design improvements for product quality, processing time, component lead time, construction design and product support.
  • Identify and create hardware and software specifications for distribution power electronics projects. Prepare and review mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Submit, review and direct vendor product submittals and quotes.
  • Design, implement and troubleshoot communication links and networks between substation devices.
  • Perform factory acceptance tests (FAT) and field/site commissioning tests. Create test plans and record results.
  • Monitor and track progress towards completion milestones and deadlines. Communicate progress towards the achievement of milestones and deadlines.
  • Guide field engineers and service personnel with start-up, troubleshooting and repair of VVC systems.
  • Propose and evaluate cost reduction initiatives for power electronics equipment and system designs.
  • Further the goals and positive, professional image of the Electrical Distribution Division by conducting business with other MEPPI departments and outside contacts in a timely and cooperative manner.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Power Electronics Engineering with 3 to 5 years of experience in VVC or Power Electronics system engineering, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of power electronics, electrical transmission, and distribution systems, and substation equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge in substation theory, protection and control, including fundamental concepts of feedback control.
  • Advanced knowledge of SCADA Communication Protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEC-61850, etc.)
  • Advanced interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read, understand and create technical drawings and material.
  • Advanced computer skills with emphasis on Microsoft Office products and understanding of CAD and engineering analysis software.
