Job Role Summary

The Surgical Inventory Management Specialist serves as a liaison between the Sterile Processing, Perioperative Services and Purchasing departments to assure smooth, uninterrupted daily materials support to the case cart functions and the operating room schedule.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Proactively contributes to Eskenazi's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County; models Eskenazi values of Professionalism, Respect, Innovation, Development and Excellence
• Serves as a liaison between the Sterile Processing, Perioperative Services and Purchasing departments to assure smooth, uninterrupted daily materials support to the case cart functions and the operating room schedule
• Assembles case carts according to pick ticket accurately and in a timely manner
• Demonstrates ability to correctly select supplies and instruments per case cart pick ticket
• Maintains proper quality assurance documentation
• Organizes process for case assembly: instruments and supplies
• Picks cases in the order of scheduled priority; prints case cart pick tickets for add-on and emergency cases; processes returns of unused instruments and supplies to the appropriate supply location
• Demonstrates method for transporting clean/contaminated instruments and equipment; when transporting clean instruments insures case cart is properly locked; when transporting contaminated instruments utilizes closed case cart
• Through daily QA audit of the case cart picking process, facilitates continuous communications and performance improvement; insures that all supplies and instruments are correct and at the staging location when needed; coordinates the search for missing items
• Through daily monitoring of product returns, communicates daily returns to the Surgical Inventory Management Supervisor
• Assists in proper management of inventory; ensures that all items are properly maintained in shelving; maintains proper inventory records for all items; completes necessary issue and return transactions within the SAP system
• Through daily updates from Surgical Inventory Management Supervisor, keeps up-to-date with the OR schedule, paying close attention to cancellations and additions
• Properly washes hands and utilizes PPE when necessary

Job Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience in a MOR setting required
• Graduate of an approved surgical tech and/or certified central service tech program preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong knowledge of operating room environment, including universal precautions in the perioperative practice setting
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong working knowledge of information systems, preferably in the health care setting as well as knowledge of supply based perpetual inventories
• Demonstrated ability to independently plan, organize, and set priorities in routine and/or emergency situations
• Demonstrated ability to get along well with others and remain calm in emergent situations
• Ability to read, write and understand English
• Ability to work with the computer as well as hand held barcode technology
• Ability to coordinate several functions simultaneously
