Student Advising/Retention Coordinator

Position Summary

The selected candidate is responsible for King-Chavez-Parks (KCP) eligible populations (traditionally first-generation low-income student populations in grades K-16) for advising and retention. The candidate will facilitate data regarding retention to business analyst to report to KCP MI Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) agency. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the College of Veterinary Medicine's (CVM) Admissions, Student Life, and Inclusivity (ASI) (Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI). The staff will be charged with promoting educational programs and services, providing some advising to KCP eligible students and summarize data on pre-veterinary students for the business analyst responsible for reporting. This staff will be responsible and work collaboratively with the CVM pre-veterinary advisor organizing supplemental instruction, and New Student Orientation. The successful candidate will also coordinate the Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, including hiring, training, and supervision of SI's. The staff will maintain a database with prospects interested in veterinary medicine for pathway development; deliver veterinary related educational programs and workshops designed to engage students in career exploration and experiential learning opportunities; work closely with consultant veterinarians to create programs for K-16 students; Collaborates with and provides services to students in the Gear UP program; hosts interested K-16 and community college prospects at the CVM to introduce them to the College and various educational pathways; collaborates with designated high schools to deliver presentations as assigned by or requests submitted to the CVM ASI ODEI; participates in outreach and recruitment activities as requested by internal and external stakeholders; provides support with grant writing and KCP grant reporting requirements; and works closely with the CVM Diversity and Inclusion Committee, students, faculty and staff. Some travel will be required in support of the goals of this position.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Educational Theory and Methodology and/or a specialization in the designated area of expertise; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in planning and overseeing seminars and conferences including public relations, organizing and disseminating training materials and information both written and web-based; budget and records maintenance and computer support; experience in supervision, database, spreadsheet, word processing, desktop publishing, knowledge of HTML programming and web site development and management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Experience with grant submissions, including requests for federal, state, local, and industry agencies; experience in college admissions, recruitment and retention.
