We are looking for a talented, driven professional to work closely with a multidisciplinary engineering team as a Satellite Systems Engineer, developing next-generation space radar systems. The ideal individual has a strong interest and acumen in software tools and workflows, as well as core aerospace principals. Understanding how Umbra's software and hardware systems interact at an intimate level, the Satellite Systems Engineer works to bring a big picture perspective to the table in order to bring novel capabilities from the drawing board to Umbra's growing constellation of radar satellites.


    Key Responsibilities
    • Collaborate with systems engineering, ground software, spacecraft software, and space operations teams on CONOPs definition, requirements formulation, and validation bringing a system-level understanding to table
    • Continuously improve your knowledge of Umbra's radar satellites and software systems to enable you to make the best decisions and recommendations on a day-to-day basis
    • Develop and improve automated workflows for day-to-day operations, analysis, anomaly resolution, on orbit operations, and mission planning
    • Act as a liaison between teams and product owner, distilling key-concepts in a way that is digestible for each team relative to their knowledge base and competencies.
    • Identify workflow improvements across the space systems department and champion solutions
    • Support spacecraft modeling, simulation, mission design, and systems engineering analyses for current and future development efforts

    Basic Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a related STEM field (such as aerospace, mechanical engineering, physics, or computer science)
    • Two or more years of Python development
      • Strong understanding of core concepts in physics, mechanics, thermodynamics, and electrodynamics
      • Consistently takes initiative and champions causes you think need to be addressed
      • Continuous learner that is not afraid to ask questions even if they may seem obvious
      • Ability and desire to work collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment, and willingness to learn new skills and technology

      Desired Qualifications
      • Advanced degree in a relevant field
      • Three or more years experience with on orbit satellite operations
      • Experience with satellite mission modeling and simulation
      • Experience working with microcontrollers as either a professional or hobbiest
      • Experience working with APIs and cloud deployed micro-services
      • Familiar using tools like as GitLab, JIRA, and Confluence to collaborate with teammates
      • Understanding of SAR or other Earth observation techniques
