Position Summary:
The Software Engineer position on the Enterprise Clinical Application (ECAT) team is responsible for managing all phases of the SDLC. Software solutions (supported by the ECAT team) which have/will be deployed are purchased/licensed from third party vendors including Censitrac, BreezeConnect, ComPAS, TrackCore etc. The position is in regular communication with clinical leaders,end users, vendors, and various on-site (facility based) and off-site technical teams (Mount Washington). Successful engineers should have experience with large multi-facility project management, excellent soft skills, a thorough understanding of systems architecture and design, and an ability to multi-task various projects/systems/customer needs. Engineers require the an ability to prioritize day to day tasks and possess an understanding of clinical healthcare business acquired through direct patient care or previous experience supporting clinical IT systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The software engineer on the ECAT team has a wide range of responsibility. These responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Project management of all phases of the SDLC for new enterprise system implementations, upgrades to existing systems, integration with upstream/downstream systems
  • Change control management and communication to team and customers
  • Direct communication with customers for daily operational support and leading implementation team meetings
  • Requirements gathering and documentation for new functionality requests
  • Documentation of specifications, scope and project plans/schedules
  • Ensure systems are compliant with Hopkins IT standards (i.e. Security, network) and continual updates to these standards and policies
  • Ensure clinical system owners' priorities are aligned and prioritized with that of enterprise HIT (health information technology)
  • Engage in testing efforts for enterprise solutions that could directly impact their systems (i.e. Imprivata, Citrix, network, etc.). In addition, document and report findings, attend meetings where information is disseminated; identify and mitigate potential issues
  • Represent their systems during design, test and implementation phases to ensure the success of initiatives for both upstream or downstream integrated systems (i.e. Epic, Onbase)
  • Clear and concise communication to customers of potential impact to their systems due to enterprise change requirements
  • Triage/analyze system issues and work with the various IT teams and vendor to resolve while communicating with clinical leaders/users
  • Participate in a weekly on-call rotation
  • Required to go on-site to clinical areas to provide customer support, resolve break/fix issues, and support project implmentations.

    Required Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or related field is required. Additional experience may be substituted for education. PMP is preferred but not required

    Work Experience: Five years of related experience for administration, programming, maintenance, performance, implementation, security and support for medium to large sized complex projects.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA's):
  • Excellent soft skills - The Software Engineer routinely communicates with the clinical staff and facilitates meetings.
  • The Software Engineer must understand all the components that make up our systems since we are the first level of support (i.e. networking, servers, desktop devices/peripherals) and all the potential points of failure. The Software Engineer does not need to be the expert in this area but needs to understand how to triage to the level where they can identify if the root cause of a problem points to any of these.
  • Project management - Project management and clinical systems support experience (multi-facility health system preferred).
  • Healthcare clinical system support experience - although experience with a specific module, vendor or department is not required, we prefer individuals who have supported clinical systems (not billing systems) and have had direct exposure to working with the clinical community and their systems. Preference is experience in a multi-facility/hospital environment like JHHS.
  • Strong critical thinking, troubleshooting and analytical skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, MS Project, SharePoint, Teams, One Drive
  • Compliance with HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality
  • Experience with HL7 system integration and troubleshooting
  • Strong understanding of business owners' workflow and use cases as well as the data flow between systems
