About the Department

The UC Simulation Center brings all health care related simulation-based approaches together for purposes of economies of scale, leverage, lowering the threshold for innovation and faculty collaboration, and maximum impact on improving patient safety, training, scholarship, and advancing related policy issues. UC Simulation is comprised of several interrelated education cores that drive our operations and help us meet our mission. We collaborate across institutions and departments of the University of Chicago Medical Center and Biological Sciences Division to help improve processes and outcomes in the areas of individual, team, technology, and system performance in health care.

Job Summary

The job provides technical support in the development, deployment, and maintenance of information technology products and services used in teaching and learning. Works with limited supervision within established procedures and practices.

The Simulation Technical Coordinator is expected to become an expert with the routine operation and maintenance of all simulation high fidelity mannequins and task trainers, as well as demonstrated proficiency on use of simulation software and AV required for scenarios. The Simulation Technical Coordinator should be able to smoothly operate basic and networked audiovisual equipment to record and playback scenarios if needed for debriefing, documentation and research purposes; this includes some video editing.

The Simulation Technical Coordinator will update and manage the Center's web site. Incorporates courses into a learning management system (LMS). Collects and enters utilization data. The Simulation Technical Coordinator collaborates successfully with members of the simulation team and faculty and may be asked to support other functions of the Center. These might include supporting conferences, assisting in maintaining documentation, helping with demonstrations and tours, etc. The Simulation Technical Coordinator is a full member of the Center team and attends staff and staff-faculty meetings weekly.

The Simulation Technical Coordinator primarily supports the Technical Specialist to gather and set up the necessary equipment needed to create a simulated clinical learning environment. In that role, the Simulation Technical Coordinator helps and/or has sole responsibility for moving and setting up/cleaning up equipment (simulation and audiovisual tools, medical equipment, moulage, props, etc.).

The Simulation Technical Coordinator also assists the Tech Specialist in maintenance and security of all equipment. This includes troubleshooting, monitoring warranties, processing replacement equipment requests with vendors, oversee secure storage, maintaining inventories and ordering supplies. After orientation and a suitable training period will be expected to be able to function alone in running simulation events for most courses with the Simulation Center.


  • Assists in preparation of reports and research by provision of reliable data from simulators, familiar with digital and analog media, and other technical sources.
  • Contributes to the development of lab policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Maintains simulation facilities in a clean, safe, and operational status.
  • Maintains and supports a culture of confidentiality, data security, and respect.
  • Exercises high professional values in the conduct of sensitive training and assessment and research exercises.
  • Hosts courses as an event manager to ensure successful delivery of the course.
  • Prepares necessary paperwork for collection of utilization data.
  • Maintenance and security of all equipment, including but not limited to troubleshooting, monitoring warranties, processing replacement equipment requests with vendors, oversee secure storage, maintaining inventories and ordering supplies.
  • Uses knowledge and experience to implement technology solutions for teaching and learning.
  • Provides technical support to teachers in integrating technology in the classroom, selecting and testing software programs, and multimedia support, instructional design, single computing facility supervision, and media classroom support.
  • Resolves unusual hardware and software issues through troubleshooting procedures.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).
Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in related field.

  • Health care clinical delivery or medical simulation experience as an EMT/EMT-P, respiratory therapy, med tech, etc.
  • Technician in a simulation center.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Certification as medical technician, paramedic or similar healthcare certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Instructor, or Pediatric Life Support (PALS) instructor (only one).

Technical Skills or Knowledge:
  • Experience with video editing software.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software and networking.
  • Strong knowledge of user, technical and system support for Macintosh and Windows operating system.

Preferred Competencies
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, particularly for cardiovascular event management training.
  • Ability to assist as an instructor in AHA courses.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to collaborate successfully on a team while applying sound independent judgement.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to self-motivate and excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and successfully in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Proven ability to set and maintain standard for a high volume of productivity in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must possess a high degree of accuracy with attention to detail and the ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
