Senior Staff Engineer, Smart Factory

The Senior Staff Engineer, Smart Factory will manage major Smart Factory Initiative for all global Plastics, Wood, & Electronics (PWE) Plants.  Major responsibilities include aligning Smart factory priorities, along with core operational technology (OT) connectivity within Kohler PWE plants, the role forms the starting point of Kohler's digital transformation journey. Project responsibility begins with the developing Roadmaps, scoping/planning phase and ends with successful start-up after which the project is turned over to Manufacturing.


Through your close interactions with the plants, leadership, and wider supporting teams (such as Manufacturing Systems and Process Technology team, IT, Capital Planning, Finance, External Vendors) you will be instrumental in influencing and implementing Kohler's strategic Smart Factory investments and drive improvements in safety, quality, delivery & cost (SQDC).


The candidate will collaborate with Manufacturing Systems and Process Technology team to assist in -- Building standards, setting guidelines and help to build out the required documentation around Process and Material Flow, Operating Culture, Lean Principles, Smart Factory technology platforms, IT infrastructure, Business Case, Team Structure, Roles and Responsibilities.

  • Align Smart factory roadmap with priorities and risks for each of the 14 global PWE Plants.
  • Manage all Smart factory projects from concept through manufacturing ownership.  Coordinate global cross functional team to Identify improvement opportunity from Smart factory standpoint, develop business case, investment, timeline and manage execution.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of current tools and templates so that each deployment becomes more gracious and non-value add activities are eliminated.

  • Engage, collaborate, and educate our associates on the benefits of Smart Factory implementation, and how with the right culture and operating principles, improvements on safety, quality, delivery, and cost can be realized.
  • Identify the issues and opportunities within a plant, understanding and evaluating KPI's and leveraging broader network knowledge to allow common issue resolution knowledge, benefits, and solution toolsets to be communicated.
  • Lead designs of User specifications, Technology procurement, acceptance at supplier, deployment, and startup.
  • Support the identification and allocation of key in plant Smart Factory resources.
  • Provide though leadership on Smart Factory, both from a technical and strategic level and give positive influence the overall journey and vision throughout our immediate leadership teams.
  • Remain up to date on technology and processes and help align the operating cultures to support the changes/advancements.
  • Completes other assignments and projects as assigned by superiors.


  • B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or similar required.
  • Previous project experience regarding "Digital Factory/Smart Factory/Industry 4.0" processes and technology is required.
  • 3 years' experience in Lean and Continuous Improvement application.
  • Demonstration of strong project management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office is required.
  • Must be self-motivated and can function within a project team environment.
  • Ability to travel ~40%
