Senior Data Analyst

Within Elsevier, our Research Analytics and Data Services (RADS) team

conducts research assessments for research leaders including governments, funders, universities, as well as corporations. We use Scopus and other data sources to generate evidence-based insights for decision making and strategic planning. We contribute to thought leadership by focusing efforts on areas of societal importance such as gender and sustainability. With over 30 people across the world, we like to collaborate and learn from each other to help our customers.

We are looking for a creative, technical, analytical, and ambitious individual with a strong personal drive to help our clients solve problems with data. Driven by the increasing need for evidence based and data driven evaluation and measurement of research performance, our clients are looking to make the most of their funding dollars, showcase their research efforts and make the best decisions about their future strategies. We can help by taking a consultative approach to understanding their problems and devising bespoke solutions to provide evidence to help inform their decisions.

You will bring new ideas for solutions to meet our clients' needs using our data assets insights, specific benchmarks or comparisons, relevant analyses and (web) services or applications which helps our clients inform their research strategies and support them in their decision-making processes.

You are a technical database expert, with strong data analytical skills who likes to apply (big data) technology to solve data questions at scale. Our offerings are versatile and flexible, and your resourcefulness using a vast array of technologies to analyze, develop, produce, and disseminate data through developing web portals or APIs) is key to success.

You will work in close collaboration with both your colleagues in the functional team, composed of three other team members, as well as a dozen analysts in the target market team with a focus on the US market, to build, evolve, and maintain our data infrastructure, develop new methodologies and indicators, and provide analytical output for both internal needs as well as client deliverables. You will also connect and work with Product Management, Product Marketing, Business Development, Strategy, Operations, Solution services, other internal stakeholders, business partners and clients across other markets covered by our broader team, which includes branches in North America, Europe and APAC

Requirements:

  • Understands the research world and agendas of Institutions, Governments and Funding bodies with regards to research performance evaluations, planning, and funding.
  • Able to understand clients' needs and to convert them into clear technical requirements.
  • Decision Making - Identifying and understanding issues, problems, and opportunities and using effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions.
  • Persuasive - able to connect different functional units to deliver timely high-quality results
  • Resilient - able to cope with pressure, ambiguity, and organizational constraints. Strong independent and rationale thinking with the ability to navigate through complexities.
  • Customer focused - committed to engage directly with external stakeholders (e.g. clients and business partners) and internal teams with the objective of creating customer satisfaction.
  • Organized and clear approaches in addressing market needs, flagging risks, developing, and executing resolution plans.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in data analysis, using relational databases, ETL processes, web services and application development and analytical reporting preferably in publishing or media industry.
  • Experience in using Big Data tools such as Spark is preferred. Proven experience in dealing with large data sets and database platforms is required.
  • Knowledge of AWS and Databricks infrastructure is a plus
  • Knowledge of other development languages (e.g., Python, SQL, Scala) and packages (e.g., Numpy, Pandas) is a plus.
  • Solid and proven analytical skills, combining strong eye for details with a good holistic view.
  • Passion for analyzing big data and an understanding of bibliometrics or scientometrics
