Department Information

The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel (OVPGC) serves as legal counsel for the University. We advise the Trustees and University Administration on all legal issues and serve as the point of contact on all legal matters involving the University.

Job Summary

  • Serves as the senior attorney on a variety of legal matters for the University.
  • Serves as lead counsel in disputes, complex transactions, and lawsuits with external parties.
  • Manages outside counsel.
  • Serves as the principal legal advisor to units and leaders across Indiana University.
  • Researches and provides guidance on proposed and existing laws and regulations.
  • Provides a broad range of legal services to the University.
  • Oversees legal filings with courts and government agencies.
  • Provides training, mentoring and guidance to other Legal Counsel employees.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.)
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 8 years of legal experience in higher education or other relevant areas
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • Admission to the Indiana Bar
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire
Preferred
  • Licensed to practice law in the state of Indiana or eligible for admission to practice law in the state of Indiana within six months of hire.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$175,000 - $185,000 a year
