Department Information

Dr. Norlander's lab investigates immune-mediated mechanisms contributing to the development and pathogenesis of hypertension and allergy/asthma.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Understands and follows experimental protocols.
  • Records, compiles, interprets, and communicates data/results.
  • Performs calculations involving molarity, % solutions, and serial dilutions.
  • Works with mice: weaning and genotyping.
  • Performs in vivo experiments using allergy/asthma models, models of hypertension, and models of viral infections.
  • Performs animal harvests for and the processing of tissues.
  • Performs lab techniques such as: Flow cytometry - staining of and acquiring samples, RNA isolation, protein isolation, Real-time PCR, traditional PCR, ELISAs, Western Blotting.
  • Obtains cell culture of immune cell populations from mice and humans.
  • Prepares, operates, and troubleshoots equipment in experimental procedures.
General Responsibilities
  • Performs a wide variety of complex experiments and reports results.
  • Keeps organized analytical data of performed experiments.
  • Provides support for equipment maintenance as needed.
  • Acts as a liaison to students and laboratory personnel for training.
  • Maintains laboratory supply requisition and management.
  • May train junior-level staff.
  • May help plan experiments or short-term goals.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in science or related field

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Work Hours

Some work on weekends will be needed if required to complete an experiment.
