Department Information

IU School of Medicine Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology prepares students for successful careers in modern biomedical sciences-in clinical medicine, industry and academics-through courses for medical students as well as MS and PhD graduate programs. The department is large and well-equipped to provide abundant support for learners at all levels-from MD students through postdoctoral fellows. Students graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the field of biochemical sciences and have a valuable ability to communicate scientific concepts and findings to diverse audiences.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Performs basic cell culture techniques, including transfection and viral transduction
  • Plasmid DNA preparation, cloning, PCR, electrophoresis
  • RNA isolation, quantitative RT-PCR, protein quantification, western blotting
  • Assists in mouse colony maintenance and drug administration
General Responsibilities
  • Performs a wide variety of complex experiments and reports results
  • Keeps organized analytical data of performed experiments
  • Provides support for equipment maintenance as needed
  • Acts as a liaison to students and laboratory personnel for training
  • Maintains laboratory supply requisition and management
  • May train junior-level staff
  • May help plan experiments or short-term goals

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in science or related field
Preferred
  • Master's degree in science or a related field
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered

SKILLS

Required
  • Proficient communication skills
  • Maintains a high degree of professionalism
  • Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills
  • Demonstrates a high commitment to quality
  • Possesses flexibility to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment

Preferred
  • Experience in molecular biology, tissue culture, and transgenic mouse models

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
