Housed in the Materials Research Laboratory (MRL), the Illinois Quantum Information, Science, and Technology Center (IQUIST) is seeking applicants for the position of Research Engineer to conduct experimental research efforts in areas related to quantum information science.

The successful candidate will become a member of both the IQUIST community and the dedicated staff of approximately 20 scientists and engineers, who maintain major research instruments in the MRL's core facilities for electron microscopy, soft materials characterization, scanning probe microscopy, laser and optical spectroscopy, surface analysis, x-ray diffraction, and nanofabrication facilities including two cleanrooms. Approximately 1,000 researchers from across our campus as well as other academic institutions, industry, and national laboratories use the facilities, logging more than 80,000 user hours annually. Responsibilities include:
•Oversee and organize the IQUIST electronics workshop by determining needs, ordering supplies and equipment, overseeing access and workflow, and training students and postdocs as capacity permits.
•Design, build, and implement custom electronics solutions for applications in quantum information science and related fields, in collaboration with students, faculty, and staff.
•Provide guidance to students in the design and development of electronic circuits.
•Develop and deliver short mini-courses and other educational/training materials for students, faculty, and staff.
•Perform other duties as assigned related to the research mission of IQUIST.

Minimum Qualifications
•Bachelor's degree in an Engineering or Physical Sciences discipline. Alternative degree fields will be considered if accompanied by equivalent experience

Preferred Qualifications
•Master's or Ph.D. in an Engineering or Physical Sciences discipline. Alternative degree fields will be considered if accompanied by equivalent experience
•Experience with the design of custom rf electronics and digital, analog, and high frequency electronics
•Experience developing electronics for applications in quantum information science research groups
•Experience with student mentorship related to electronics and circuit design
•Experience with FPGA programming

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
•Demonstrated ability to carry out electronics design related to one or more of the following areas:
○digital and rf/microwave electronics (such as experience with benchtop instrumentation, circuit design and assembly, digital programming)
○design of analog and digital circuits
○printed circuit board design for high-frequency applications
•Strong verbal, listening, and written communication skills

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible.
