The University of Virginia School of Education and Human Development seeks a Research Assistant Professor (non-tenure track) to support Youth-Nex, the UVA Center to Promote Effective Youth Development, and the Department of Education Leadership, Foundations and Policy. The Research Assistant Professor will focus on support for our program activities within the areas of positive youth development, out-of-school time (OST) programs, and equity-focused research-practice partnerships.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Faculty program lead for the line of work on out-of-school programming within Youth-Nex, including identifying potential grants to support RPPs with and evaluations for OST settings, engaging in existing partnership leading peer learning communities for Boys & Girls Clubs, and other initiatives as developed (25% time).

  • Maintaining line of independent scholarship aligned with the areas noted above in OST, educational equity, and RPP's (75% time).

  • Potential for teaching in areas aligned with successful candidate's expertise.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated commitment to equity in scholarship and teaching and an interest in working collaboratively with faculty and students at all levels.

  • Skills relating to synthesizing research literature, data management and collection of field studies, as well as a familiarity with multi-methods approaches to research.

  • Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative data collection and design, management, and analysis skills using software such as Dedoose, online tools such as Qualtrics, QuestionPro, or SurveyMonkey.

  • Substantive understanding of psychological research literature in adolescent development, positive youth development, out-of-school time programs for youth, and equity and diversity in educational contexts.

The School of Education and Human Development offers a rich intellectual and collaborative environment for the preparation, development, practice, and impact of educational leaders. Opportunities for collaboration, partnership, and research are available through the K-12 Advisory Council, a 106-district outreach initiative sponsored by the School of Education; the iLEAD partnership with a K-12 school district (an improvement science initiative with the Carnegie Foundation); and preparation partnerships with Virginia school divisions. Several well-established research centers at the School of Education and Human Development offer additional collaboration and research opportunities in educational policy, the quality of teaching and learning, and adolescent development and well-being (EdPolicyWorks, CASTL, and Youth-Nex, respectively). The Darden-EHD Partnership for Leaders in Education offers sustained professional learning for district-level leaders to implement systemic change.

Required Qualifications and Experiences:

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in Educational Psychology, Applied Developmental Science, or a related field by the start date of the position.

  • Experience working on research-practice partnerships and translating research to practice for out-of-school programs and educators is required.

  • Experience in working on translational and community-engaged scholarship, supporting educational and OST programs to use data to drive equity-focused decision making and continual improvement.

  • Experience building relationships with external stakeholders in educational and out-of-school contexts.

Preferred Qualifications and Experiences:

  • Three years postdoctoral training by the position start date.

  • Experience with multi-disciplinary research teams, grant writing, and demonstrated ability to take leadership and deliver on projects and mentor undergraduate and/or graduate students is highly preferred.

  • Experience teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

  • Experience collecting qualitative and quantitative data in out-of-school programs and settings.

  • Experience grant writing.

  • Potential for outstanding research commensurate with a Research I institution is preferred, as is an independent line of research with substantive focus on issues related to positive youth development, out-of-school time settings for adolescents, and educational equity.

Research Assistant Professors are 12-month appointments, and continuation is dependent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. The anticipated start date of this position is September 1st, 2023.
