About the Department

Susan Goldin-Meadow is the Beardsley Ruml Distinguished Service Professor in the Departments of Psychology, Comparative Human Development, the College, and the Committee on Education at the University of Chicago, as well as the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Center for Gesture, Sign, and Language (CGSL) at the University of Chicago. The Goldin-Meadow research team has more than 40 year's experience collecting and coding speech and gesture data in schools and from different cultures around the world. The goal is to use information that our hands reveal to better understand what's in our minds. The lab consists of several research-dedicated rooms for students, postdoctoral fellows, and research assistants that include workstations for data analysis, as well as spaces for participant testing.

Job Summary

The job performs routine assignments related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.

The Goldin-Meadow laboratory (https://voices.uchicago.edu/goldinmeadowlab/) at the University of Chicago seeks a full time research assistant to help collect and code data for studies involving hearing and deaf participants. Additionally, this individual will need to take the lead in coordinating the activities of the Center for Gesture and Sign Language.

Responsibilities

  • Works alongside others and independently, the RA will collect data from children in school, from adults in a lab or home setting, and/or from adults or children remotely via video chat.
  • Supervises RA's and undergraduate staff and provides training and direction for accurate methods of transcribing and data collection.
  • Responsible for transcription of data, coding, and assist with data analysis.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert and point person for others in the lab on American Sign Language and gesture coding, as well as data collection and analysis tools such as ELAN, Qualtrics, Excel, etc.
  • Responsible for hosting occasional workshops on data collection tools and analysis methods.
  • Assists with the development of data collection tools and manage data files.
  • Assists with reports, manuscripts, creating images for papers, and conference preparation.
  • Initiates contact and liaises with families and/or schools to schedule a target number of participants per project as well as scheduling meetings and presentations for CGSL faculty and student.
  • Maintains all Institutional Review Board (IRB) permissions and submitting IRB amendments for relevant projects.
  • Works with invited guests and faculty at the Center for Gesture and Sign Language (CGSL) to schedule talks, book travel, and issue honorariums and reimbursements. Assist directors to organize special CGSL events, act as point of contact for invited guests, assist with catering, publicity, scheduling, room reservations, and other details as needed.
  • Develops and manages budget and process payments using University financial systems.
  • Recruits CGSL applications from graduate students and assists students in the financial management process.
  • Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • Maintains recruiting and scheduling research subjects; assisting with developing or amending study protocols; assisting with developing data collection tools; assisting with building databases; and providing general administrative support. Has general awareness in research techniques or methods, regulatory policies and procedures, and relevant scientific field
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in linguistics, psychology, cognitive science, data science, statistics, applied mathematics, or a related field.

Experience:
  • Basic knowledge in relevant scientific field.
  • Experience working with children and in collecting experimental data.
  • Experience in coding behaviors (previous gesture and/or speech coding).
  • Fluency in American Sign Language.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of Macintosh computers and standard video equipment.
  • Experience with database management (e.g., SQL or FileMaker Pro), scripting in Python, and statistical software (R).
  • Experience with video editing software.

Working Conditions
  • This position is fully remote.

Salary Range
  • $47,476 - $50,700
