For the last 100 years, our engines, generators and UPS products have powered homes, hospitals lawn mowers, stadiums, and everything in-between. The Project Engineer, Diesel Engines is responsible for providing support of large diesel-powered generator sets within Kohler Power Systems.  This individual will be considered the primary expert for all service activities and issues for large diesel engines product line.  This individual will be involved in all phases of the product life cycle from the product design phase and various stages of the product life cycle to ensure service and technical support is consistent with the department and company philosophy.

  • Actively participate in the product development process to ensure that the product can be serviced and repaired effectively and that considerations are made during the development cycle for serviceability and low cost of ownership.
  • Provide hands on resources during the development stages to learn the product and ensure product integrity and serviceability at release date.
  • Develop and implement special tools and equipment necessary to service the product.
  • In cooperation with the Technical Publications department, develop service literature, installation information, and other support documents that will provide a high level of service support.
  • Provide training for Kohler associates as needed for installation and service support.
  • Assist the Service Training department in development of on-line and classroom training programs.  Provide support for the Training Department by assisting in training for customers at the factory and in the field.
  • Work with the Aftermarket Parts department to develop an initial factory service stock of replacement parts; develop a list of required parts for all levels of field service support including dealers and distributors.
  • Coordinate the procurement and release of special tools and equipment to ensure timely service repairs by Kohler customers.  This may include a special tool loaner program.
  • Develop a methodology of release of software products used in the product line(s) and ensure a timely release of any software updates.  Ensure that software updates are communicated to all service entities.
  • Train other Kohler associates as needed to provide backup support for customers.
  • Travel as needed to customer locations to investigate product issues and assist Kohler distributors, dealers, and customers in resolving product issues.
  • If necessary, travel to customers and participate in repair activities.  These repair activities may involve and include Kohler service entities, direct customers, and owners.
  • Responsible for performing failure analysis and preparing reports for the Quality department for corrective action.

Skills/Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline (preferably Mechanical Engineering) from an ABET accredited engineering or engineering technology program OR Bachelor's degree in a related field with successful completion of the EIT exam or a PE license is required.
  • At least 2 years' experience in the sale and service of technical-type products.
  • Customer service experience and service training experience is a plus.
  • Ability to travel to customer sites 30-50%.
