About The Site

The Waltham R&D site is home to our small-molecule oncology research in North America, and is situated within a biopharma cluster of academic research institutions, medical centers, pharmaceutical companies and biotech startups. The Boston region is consistently ranked #1 globally for biotech research, investment, talent recruitment and lab space.

The campus, also known as the Boston BioHub, is one of the largest and most dynamic life-science research hubs in the region. It is home to more than 800 scientists and technical specialists working in nine different pharmaceutical and biotech companies. The site is also home to the AstraZeneca Incubator, a program that helps emerging companies advance novel and innovative healthcare solutions to meet the needs of patients. Plenty of free parking, with charging stations now available for electric vehicles, and shuttle service to local transportation hubs.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

We are seeking to recruit a Principal Scientist Medicinal Chemistry leader in the Oncology Chemistry group in Waltham, MA. In this role, you will provide scientific leadership, including directly lead specific project(s), be a global scientific influencer, and serve as a mentor to less experienced scientists.

You will be accountable for:

  • Driving the strategic direction of the project(s) assigned in alignment with the portfolio priorities
  • Ensuring the timely delivery of key activities and project milestones by working closely across functions
  • Working globally within Oncology Chemistry department to drive a global community of practice model to accelerate project delivery
  • Communicating optimally with senior leadership
  • Providing scientific mentorship to junior medicinal chemists

Essential Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in organic chemistry with >8 years of research experience, or BS/MS in chemistry with >15 years of research experience within the pharmaceutical industry
  • 'Pioneering' knowledge of medicinal chemistry theories, methodologies and practices, and their applications in small molecule drug discovery, from target identification to development candidate delivery
  • Robust track record of portfolio delivery, with proven examples of leading a team to tackle medicinal chemistry challenges by driving strategies and innovation
  • Excellent cross-functional knowledge and team-working skills, and ability to represent chemistry in cross-disciplinary discussions
  • Effective organizational, communication, interpersonal skills with the flexibility to accommodate programmatic changes and/or scientific directions.
  • Strong track record of leading, motivating, developing a team of highly qualified personnel
  • Strong record of recent peer-reviewed publications and/or external presentations and engagement in the external scientific community.

Desirable Experience:
  • Strategic contribution to scientific and/or business initiatives within biotech/pharma industry.
  • Track record of working with external partners
  • Experience with novel medicinal chemistry modalities
  • Experience with small molecule drug discovery within oncology
