We are looking for a hardworking and enthusiastic Plant Controller to join our team and help us drive operational performance throughout our West Coast facilities.

The Plant Controller will oversee the company's West Coast manufacturing facilities, which are budgeted for $80 million revenue in 2022, with 200 employees operating in a brand new, state-of the art facility. The successful candidate will initiate accounting process upgrades of our newly acquired Omega Packaging operations and lead the integration into Comar's financial system.

This role is an integral part of the Plant Management team as well as a key member of the Corporate Finance team. This position requires direct involvement in both plant operations and corporate finance activities and initiatives. Duties include overall responsibility for accuracy and timeliness of financial and operational management information to be used in reporting financial results as well as managing the facility.

THE ROLE

Monthly Financial Close

  • Prepare all required journal entries and accruals for plant period costs.
  • Evaluate the financial performance of the plant - analyze spending trends and variances to budget.
  • Explain key performance metrics.


Production Variance Review
  • Organize & support efforts to reduce unfavorable variances and targeted cost reduction projects.
  • Provide additional insight to operations on metrics such as scrap, cost of quality, labor, inventory fluctuations and obsolescence.


Annual Plant Budget and Ongoing Forecasts
  • Work with Commercial Team on sales budget and with plant management to develop capacity requirements by work center, along with expense, capital and inventory budgets.

Standard Cost Maintenance
  • Evaluate standard costing and product margins and adjust as required based on cost input or manufacturing changes.
  • Develop and monitor machine rates.
  • Prepare capital project justification / financial analysis, track spending and monitor project performance.
  • Maintain fixed asset register: record new assets, transfers or retirements and calculate monthly depreciation figures. Ensure local sales/use tax and property tax compliance.
  • Support the plant’s safety program, ISO compliance and Total Process Improvement initiatives.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting or related field, with a minimum of 5 years’ cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supervising junior staff.

Preferred:
  • CMA and/or CPA designation.
  • Experience with financial and operations analysis in the areas of inventory control and supply chain management.

  • Ability to proactively take lead on providing analysis and decision support to the Plant Management team and provide management support for Plant Manager.
  • Ability to build relationships with both Finance and Operations management and function in a matrix position - a team player.
  • Excellent supervisory skills to direct and oversee the performance of the junior accountant reporting to this position.
  • Strong analytical skills, including ability to build basic financial models.
  • Critical problem-solving ability supported by data and understanding of key business requirements.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, within established and aggressive deadlines, and operate with a high sense of urgency and ability to deliver on commitments.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to listen to the needs of others, research and comprehend complex matters, articulate issues in a clear and concise manner, and present findings as well as recommendations in both oral and written presentations.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to work with all levels of an organization.
  • Management of tasks assigned to other staff within the plant in connection with financial processes.
  • Comfort with initiating and responding to change; demonstrated ability to identify, develop, and implement process/system improvements.
  • Confidence to state opinion even when the majority disagrees.
  • Comprehension of production and inventory descriptive terms in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience investigating and troubleshoot transactions with focused attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Advanced MS Excel (pivot tables, lookups, etc.) and Power Point skills, hands-on working knowledge with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems such as IQMS.
