IUI Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO program that serves 127 first-generation, low-income high school students who have the potential to succeed in college. The program emphasizes preparation in English, math, science and foreign language as well as study skills, financial literacy, and college preparation workshops. Upward Bound serves students in grades 9-12 from 7 local high schools in Indianapolis. These high schools include Arsenal Technical, Shortridge, George Washington, Crispus Attucks, and Warren Central High Schools.

Job Summary

Upward Bound is currently seeking instructors to teach for 6 weeks in the Summer Academy at IUPUI. The program is hiring instructors to teach high school level English, Science, Foreign Language, and Math. The program works to prepare students to have the skills they need to succeed in high school and college. The Upward Bound Summer Academy is not a traditional summer school, but rather a learning community where students expand their mind, gain independence, and participate in a simulated college experience.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Establishes key objectives for classes.
  • Creates curriculum that accomplishes the set objectives and aligns with grant objectives.
  • Develops a syllabus that outlines topics that will be explored and listing due dates for assignments and exams.
  • Makes lesson plans that describe how information will be presented.
  • Gives lectures and organize activities to present material and deepen understanding of coursework.
  • Writes, administers, and grades examinations that test students' knowledge.
  • Answers students' questions and provide support to help them succeed.
  • Records students' attendance and grades.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Preferred
  • Indiana teaching license/certification.
  • Secondary school certification.
SKILLS

Required

  • Ability to work effectively with students with diverse academic needs.
  • Demonstrates engaged learning techniques, enthusiasm, and ability to motivate students.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Possesses commitment to teaching culturally diverse students.
  • Ability to guide students towards excellence.
  • Proficient communication skills.

Advertised Salary

$2,000 - $3,500 for the summer, based on certification and experience.
