The nurse manager is a registered professional nurse, conversant with the nursing process, who has twenty-four hour accountability, long term planning and human and fiscal resources accountability in a designated patient care area. Compliance with all regulatory groups to ensure safe, ethical, and quality patient/family centered-care. The manager promotes MAGIS behavior within the organization and patient care area; and supports various health system-sponsored programs.
Operationalize the organization's mission, philosophy, operating principles, model of care, and strategic plans/goals. a) Develop, implement and evaluate annual department goals and objectives in alignment with the mission, philosophy, operating principles, model of care and strategic plans/goals. b) Ensure ongoing compliance with accreditation, regulatory, and professional standards impacting the clinical area.

Ensure staff knowledge and participation in quality improvement activities, including but not limited to The Joint Commission's core measure projects, National Patient Safety Goals initiatives, and NDNQI goals; evidenced-based projects and research activities (as appropriate).

a)Conduct bi-annual review of all unit-specific policies/procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and evidenced based practice. b)Communicate current professional nursing standards that reflect standards of care for specific patient populations. c)Participates in house-wide quality and safety indicators and evidenced-based projects, and establishes unit specific quality indicators. Establishes unit based evidenced-based projects/research projects as appropriate. d) Utilize the patient safety communication system, identify opportunities for improvement and lead/participate in initiatives to improve quality and safety e)Demonstrate improvement in the quality and safety of patient care through an interdisciplinary unit based committee/mechanism, which monitors the effectiveness/appropriateness and outcomes of patient care.

Ensure qualified staff to meet patient/family care needs. a) Responsible for recruiting, interviewing and selecting staff in collaboration with Human Resources, staff and the multidisciplinary team as appropriate. b)Develop and maintain staffing guidelines. c) Ensure accuracy and timeliness of patient classification data or other primary workload statistics d)Provide educational opportunities for staff related to age-specific and developmentally appropriate patient care.

Promoting the nursing process, by ensuring clinical competence and service orientation of staff through effective and diverse teams. a)Collaborate with nursing education to provide comprehensive

unit-specific orientation programs and yearly competency training. b)Facilitate/support opportunities for continuing education including in-services, seminars, conferences, and national certification. c)Utilize interdisciplinary resources for staff development. d)Communicate and

ensure compliance with Medical center and unit policies. e)Provide timely and constructive feedback related to all aspects of performance. f) Conduct coaching and counseling for performance improvement and succession planning.

Ensure that operations, systems and processes are streamlined to provide seamless, ethical, efficient delivery of patient/family centered care. a)Coordinate departmental activities collaboratively with other disciplines and departments including multidisciplinary rounding. b)Identify and address opportunities for improvement in processes through point of service monitoring, problem solving, and shared decision-making. c)Champions, supports, develops, and implements evidenced-based innovations and monitors and evaluates appropriately. d)Authorize purchases and maintain inventories for optimal unit function. e) Monitor and address environmental and physical conditions of unit/service area(s) to maintain a safe and clean environment for patients, families, and staff.

f)Ensure operation and maximize utilization of available computerized systems. g)Cultivate an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust and foster successful partnerships with the administrative director, unit medical director, health care team, other organizational units and the community.

h)Empower staff to improve operations and solve problems and encourage their participation in the shared decision-making process/unit/house-wide councils/committees. i)Ensure confidentiality of all patient and staff information. j)Conduct all business in an ethical manner and follow corporate compliance guidelines.

Ensure that service expectation of internal and external customers and colleagues are met or exceeded. a) Identify customers for the work environment including patient, families, physicians, students, and payers.

b) Develop and implement strategies to assess, improve, and monitor customer satisfaction of all customers including the healthcare team (i.e., management by walking around, regular patient/family rounding).

Ensure capital, salary, and non-salary expense budgets correlate with patient care needs and ensure revenue is maximized. a)Coordinate, develop, implement and monitor budgets. b)Document and justify requests. c)Analyze budget variances and develop initiatives that create synergy between revenue and expense. d)Develop, implement, and evaluate initiatives to enhance operational effectiveness. e)Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate initiatives to enhance operational revenues and expenses
