The HLA Medical Technologist II functions independently under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor. On a daily basis this position performs high complexity testing on blood and tissue samples of patients and donors for solid organ and bone marrow transplantation; testing for blood transfusion, and HLA related disease associations and treatment. The technologist recognizes and resolves discrepancies observed in test results and equipment and determines priorities and tests required for patients and communicates results to appropriate physicians. Performs specialized and non-routine testing as required, participates in training new personnel, developing new assays, and implementing performance improvement initiatives.

1. Receives and accessions all specimens, verifies that all information is accurate and complete, obtains any missing information from appropriate physician or patient care unit.

2. Performs and interprets high complexity testing from blood or tissue by serological or molecular techniques to determine HLA Class I and II phenotypes; according to the Standard Operating Procedure Manual. Effectively communicates information to clinicians and coordinators as needed.

3. Organizes and performs HLA antibody identification procedures using panel screening and donor crossmatching to identify histocompatibility.

4. Accurately documents all laboratory results, prepares reports, and ensures all records are complete, legible, and reviewed by supervisor or director.

5. Enters and maintains computer records for patient data, serum analysis, test results, reagents.

6. On a rotating basis, participates in 24 hour on call coverage for non-living organ donor typing and crossmatching and other stat procedures as needed. Performs, interprets, and communicates results of these tests to appropriate clinician, coordinator or Organ Procurement Organization. Refers technical difficulties to supervisor or director for consultation and assistance.

7. Participates in on going quality control, competency and proficiency testing, and equipment maintenance. Reports any discrepancies, unusual results, or equipment failures to supervisor. Assists with updating of procedure manuals.

8. Prepares various reagents using equipment such as balance, pH meter, filtration techniques, and documents appropriately.

9. Assures proper laboratory operation by performing inventory checks and maintaining a safe and clean laboratory area.

10. Follows all laboratory policies and procedures for fire and chemical safety and infection control as well as patient confidentiality.

11. Participates in continuing education programs and activities in relevant areas with hours sufficient to allow ASHI accreditation.

12. Assists in training of new employees and demonstrations for residents, fellows, students and visiting personnel.

13. Participates in evaluating new methods, reagents or equipment, or other performance improvement initiatives. May be assigned to special projects as needed by Supervisor or Director.

Qualifications
1. BS or BA in Science from an accredited college; Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology preferred and

National certification (preferably ABHI) and

Significant or specialized experience (2 years in specialty)
OR

2. Medical Technologist I at MGH and

National certification (preferably ABHI) and

Two years performance evaluations which exceed expectations at Med Tech 1 level and

Works independently and

Twenty hours of documented continuing education in previous two years within division, hospital or external programs or

Participation in divisional operations improvement projects or

Participation in development and implementation of new testing methods
