Zurich North America is currently seeking a market-facing underwriter with experience in either domestic or international property and/or casualty lines. This individual will be responsible for analyzing and underwriting new and renewal business, under general direction, utilizing training to be provided on The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority levels on assignments of higher technical complexity ensuring a high level service to customers.

This position may be located in New York or Boston. Zurich maintains an office footprint while also offering a flex work environment supporting role-based flexibility in a hybrid work environment which ensures a balance of needs of our employees and our market-facing commitments to our customers, brokers and distributors.

Responsibilities:

  • Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations, and rating annual rules.

  • Develop, maintain & collaborate with Line of Business representatives on referrals and other business related needs, as appropriate.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with distributors (agents & brokers) in support of business retention and acquisition and works with customers and distributors (agents & brokers) to determine their insurance related needs and provide solutions.

  • Supports the sales culture by being dedicated to a team of UW's in the International field.

  • Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities.

  • Complete detailed opportunity assessment with key distributors to identify growth opportunities

  • Qualify accounts to meet with the organization's appetite, balanced with sound business opportunity.

  • Make broker/customer and on-sight calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose Negotiate Terms & Conditions and close deals.

  • Cross-Sell other lines of business to increase product density with the account

  • Accounts vary with average premium of USD 25k to around $250K, as well as working in tandem with our Domestic team with Fortune 500 businesses.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area. For SURETY P OSITIONS ONLY: OR Finance, Accounting or Banking experience. For Financial Lines positions only- Public, Management Liability and FI: OR Accounting, Finance or Risk Management. For Cyber positions only: OR IT, Cybersecurity Sales or Contract / Vendor Management.

OR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 6 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area

OR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 4 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area

  • Knowledge of line/s of business and the legal and regulatory guidelines

  • Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business

  • Experience with Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Experience underwriting property and/or casualty business (either domestic or international)

  • Experience underwriting international business

  • Established broker relationships within the northeast region

  • Sales execution mindset

  • Critical thinking and creative problem solving skills
