Position Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Student Programs and serving within the KMCWR Division student programs team, the Manager of Fitness and Wellness, Kennedy Mountain Campus, Wellness and Recreation (KMCWR) is responsible for all fitness and wellness programs, events, and services within the Division as well as collaboration with key partners across campus, the community, and the region. The Manager of Fitness and Wellness serves as the primary contact and liaison for division-wide fitness and wellness offerings. This includes responsibilities for program, event, and service creation, development, and implementation; program, event, and service scheduling; marketing and communication of programs, events, and services; and human resources. Programs, events, and services include, but are not limited to; group fitness, virtual fitness, personal training, nutrition coaching, wellness coaching, wellness education, wellness fairs, video series, in-body assessments, certifications, special events, and related programs and operations.

The Manager of Fitness and Wellness must play a key role in reestablishing fitness and wellness programs for the University community and integrating our offerings with the DU 4D Experience. The KMCWR division must lead these efforts and expand student, faculty, and staff personal growth, reflection, and lifelong skills and behaviors.

Essential Functions

Program, Event, and Services Management

  • Develop and implement a group fitness/wellness program that offers 25-35 classes weekly addressing key wellbeing needs of students, faculty, and staff
  • Provide personal training, small group training, and performance training for student participants, club sports, and youth competitive sports.
  • Coordinate, manage, and expand the nutrition coaching program.
  • Develop and implement a massage service program.
  • Develop and implement a recovery program.
  • Develop and implement a wellness coaching program utilizing the ACE Health Coaching program to certify student peer coaches.
  • Coordinate weekly wellness education clinics, workshops, and fitness/wellness special events at the Ritchie Center, at the Kennedy Mountain Campus, at Nagel Hall, and through a video series.
  • Coordinate new member facility orientations, in-body assessments, and wellness consultations to maximize engagement with programs, events, and services.
  • Provide participant communication and customer service between fitness/wellness programs and staff; schedule and conduct meetings and calls with participants prior to a session/program; prepare schedules, registration, pricing, and payment
  • Conduct program walkthroughs to confirm that equipment, staff, and instruction is safe, consistent, and developmentally appropriate
  • Manage day-of-programs and resolve issues/problems/questions
  • Ensure all programs, events, and services are properly staffed and supervised and develop and implement staff certifications and in-service opportunities to improve quality
  • Assist with the implementation of policies and procedures to include facility access, emergency action plans, and standard operating procedures.
  • Oversee the coordination of fitness and wellness program offerings including planning and scheduling programs, events and classes, coordinating facility use, purchasing and maintaining equipment used in programs, events, and classes and quality assurance.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Coordinate scheduling logistics for the Coors Fitness Center, Studio Spaces, Nagel Hall, and Coaching Studio one year in advance and ensure all published schedules are accurate for 60 days.
  • Maintain daily venue operations including preparing and monitoring daily operations, providing direction to staff, address potential risks and opportunities, and observing activities to ensure safety and to maximize participation.
  • Maintain facility equipment by monitoring maintenance activities, completing scheduled maintenance activities; addressing preventive maintenance requirements; and conducting operating and safety checks.
  • Manage fitness and wellness equipment inventory to ensure adequate inventory levels of program supplies, fitness center studio equipment and technology, in-body supplies, training supplies, etc.
  • Respond to routine inquiries via in-person, telephone, and electronic communication modes.
  • Serve as a subject matter resource to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Gather, analyze and report on fitness and wellness programs, events and services data.
  • Collect and compile monthly, quarterly, and annual operational and statistical data to determine and improve methods and procedures to better serve participants
  • Collect satisfaction surveys and customer response forms; create reports and recommend solutions.
  • Assist in administration of the online fitness program registration system(s). Review documents and forms for completeness, track files for follow up and distribute for review.
  • Contribute to general office administration and process improvements.

Human Resources

  • Manage fitness and wellness staffing requirements including the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, certifications, and evaluation of staff.
  • Ensure that staff are available and on-time for all fitness and wellness programs. If unavailable, ensure that coverage is provided from other team members or professional staff.
  • Operate within the staffing budget parameters and utilize sub-it-up and kronos systems to forecast and manage labor costs.
  • Ensure all part-time staff payroll is entered accurately and within the timeframe set by the University.
  • Address all performance issues in a timely manner.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • This position involves frequent interaction with a variety of students, faculty, staff, and community members and calls for effective and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers and staff is essential.
  • Detail orientated and highly organized.
  • Have demonstrated knowledge of fitness and wellness trends, program offerings, equipment, and key wellbeing needs of a University community.
  • Have demonstrated ability of starting new programs, events, and services.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Have demonstrated leadership and management ability; strong organizational, planning, and interpersonal skills; strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree.
  • One (1) year of experience managing fitness and wellness programs, events, and services.
  • One (1) year of management/supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree.
  • Two (2) years of experience managing fitness and wellness programs, events, and services.
  • Two (2) years of management/supervisory experience.

Working Environment

The position is based in a fitness and wellness setting, with frequent people interactions.
The position involves travel to various campus locations for fitness and wellness meetings and other Kennedy Mountain Campus, Wellness and Recreation business.
The environment is fast paced and is characterized by frequent interruptions and multiple demands.

Physical Activities

Moderate lifting is required.
Must be able to move between offices and across campus to various meetings and presentations.
Ability to adjust focus for reading and editing situations.
Talking and listening are continuous activities.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 7.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $50,000-$55,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
