Description
The Civil Engineering Department is searching for a Maintenance Technician. This position would provide direct support to the Nebraska Air National Guard (NEANG). This is work as an entry-level to semi-skilled building laborer or tradesperson in the performance of routine grounds maintenance, custodial/janitorial or housekeeping work, and apprentice-level facility maintenance activities. Work is typically labor intensive and requires close to general supervision in at least one building or maintenance trade including custodial/housekeeping work, uncomplicated building repair and maintenance, or groundskeeping work. Positions at this level receive verbal instruction to properly accomplish or organize tasks. Decision-making authority is limited to selection of tools or equipment and determining the organization and sequence of separate work tasks.

Examples of Work
Primary craftsperson and point of contact for grounds maintenance at the Nebraska Air National Guard. Ensures compliance with military, federal state safety standards, codes and requirements. Maintains 129 acres of property to include ramp sweeping, mowing, trimming, landscaping, chainsaw operations, snow and ice removal, material handling, traffic sign maintenance, flood gate maintenance, concrete and asphalt repairs. Acquires bids for lawncare services outside of the scope of this position (fertilizing, weed control, tree maintenance) as needed. Operates heavy and small equipment with or without attachments such as Oshkosh Snow Blowers/Plows, 5 and 10 Ton Dump Trucks, Vacuum Sweepers, Front End Loaders, Backhoes, 6 and 10k forklifts, Skid Steers, Bobcat Toolcat, Polar Tracks, Toro Workmans, Kubotas and other similar heavy and small equipment. Maintains, troubleshoots and performs minor repairs to heavy equipment, small equipment, and attachments. Performs specialized preventative maintenance to real property; to include drop arm barrier system and irrigation system. Inspects the perimeter fence and flood gates on a recurring schedule, performs maintenance and repairs as needed. Completes customer related work orders pertaining to grounds maintenance expertise on a weekly basis. Complete maintenance records on equipment and special purpose vehicles. Cleans, repairs, and maintains all tools and equipment used in the grounds trade. Competent with computer programs and data entry. Conducts entries into computer systems such as inventory of shop stock materials and parts, requisitioning of materials, entering time spent against work orders, requesting approval for pharmacy materials, completing online training and other related computer tasks. Obtains proper permits to accomplish work to be complete. Trains new employees or other crafts persons in proper techniques for operations of equipment and/or maintenance of real property and equipment. Other duties as assigned to include escorting contractors and assisting other CE crafts persons.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: No specific education, training, or experience is required for entry to this class.

OTHER: Work may be performed in adverse weather, on rough terrain or in tight spaces. Work may involve the use of hazardous or noxious chemicals and/or exposure to noise and temperature extremes. Work schedules may involve ten-hour or other extended work days, or work during evenings and weekends. Must demonstrate sufficient physical strength and agility to operate heavy cleaning and maintenance equipment, lift/move heavy objects weighing 50 pounds or more and perform manual labor. Valid driver's license is required to operate State vehicles.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: groundskeeping and horticultural practices; safe use of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides; standard use, maintenance and safety practices associated with hand tools, power tools and light to heavy machinery; building and mechanical trade methods, practices and procedures; occupational hazards and safety precautions followed in building maintenance operations; commercial cleaning practices, equipment, supplies and techniques. Skill in: the use of hand tools, power tools and building maintenance equipment; basic office and computer skills including competency in the use of email, procurement and building system applications. Ability to: communicate effectively, understand and follow instructions, read and comprehend blueprints, reference books and equipment manuals; utilize and maintain hand tools, power tools and grounds and building equipment safely; operate industrial-type cleaning equipment; climb ladders and scaffolding to perform work above ground.
