The Latinx Resource Center (LRC) provides resources, support services, community engagement and educational experiences to support student's academic and social success. The Center also provides a venue for all students to learn about Latinx culture, heritage, and traditions. The position is housed within an identity-based center model that acknowledges and affirms the importance of intersectional and holistic student development.
The Latinx Engagement Coordinator reports to the Manager of the LRC. The Coordinator is responsible for regular support and engagement with students, faculty, staff and the community both at the physical presence at the Aurora Downtown Campus and a virtual presence to support all students in fulfillment of the college's federal Title V grant objectives. This position is funded by the Title V grant and must meet all federal grant requirements.
Supports the mission by creating an inclusive environment to support student success. Collaborate with other campus units and student organizations on Latinx/a/o programming, advising, and leadership development, as part of a college-wide effort to reduce the graduation gap that exists between racially underrepresented and white students and to increase the numbers of diverse and underrepresented students at Waubonsee Community College. Create partnerships with student development units and Educational Affairs divisions and units across campuses to ensure resource gathering and student advising.
Develops and maintains institutional and non-institutional student referral sources for Latinx students.
Work directly with students as a role model and mentor, providing support, encouragement, information, referrals and interventions to improve retention and completion. Co-coordinate the Mentoring Council with the Dean for Students office, providing mentoring and support for men of color aimed at increasing retention and completion of Latinx, Black, Asian and Pacific Islander men.
Support the implementation of a comprehensive plan to engage Hispanic/Latinx students to create a sense of identity and belonging as part of the Waubonsee community.
Initiates referrals for students to services such as Financial Aid, Academic Advising, Counseling, Tutoring, etc.
Develops educationally transformative programs that result in cultural awareness and appreciation for diversity and cross-cultural engagement centering on the importance of Latin American and Latino culture (e.g. Día de los Muertos, Día de las Madres, Las Posadas). This includes retention programming that primarily focuses on college knowledge, academic development, professional development, and social awareness.
Coordinates and promotes dynamic educational programs and events that enhance the Waubonsee community. Create a caring and inclusive campus which highlight Latin American and Latino cultures. Stay up to date on current trends affecting Latinx/a/o in higher education. Serve as the point of contact and co-coordinators for Latinx Heritage Month Programming.
Coordinate virtual engagement experiences tailored to meet the needs of the diverse student population at Waubonsee and ensure education, support, and consistent interactions happen with a specific focus on adult and non-traditional student populations.
Assists the LRC Manager in facilitating a safe and supportive environment for students.
Supports collaborations with organizations in the Hispanic/Latinx community to increase access and awareness of Hispanic/Latinx culture and history.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Latinx Resource Center Manager or Chief Diversity Officer and Dean for Students.
Bachelor's degree in Student Development, Counseling or related area is required.
Three years providing direct services to students/clients in a case management model that incorporates referrals to services and follow-up.
Higher education experience preferred.
Bilingual Spanish/English required.
Excellent communication, conceptual and analytical skills. Demonstrated proficiency with technology.
Experience working with diverse student/client populations and the ability to work cooperatively with a wide range of on-campus and off-campus support providers.
