The Brayman Lab in the Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia is seeking a Laboratory Specialist. The duties of this position include but are not limited to, performing/assisting with studies investigating underlying mechanisms of type 1 diabetes and recurrence of diabetes in various murine models of diabetes as well as assisting with human pancreatic islet isolations in the new GMP islet isolation facility. Research responsibilities include working with mice, mouse islet isolation and transplantation, collection of mouse tissue and blood for proteomic studies, measuring blood glucose levels, flow cytometry, protein (e.g. Immunoglobulin M) purification & chromatography, immunoassays, tissue culture, electrophoresis and western blot, ELISA's, DNA and RNA extractions and in vitro and in vivo experiments related to ongoing studies. Procedures and protocols will be taught to the selected candidate, although experience is a plus. Especially experience with PROTEOMIC studies will be considered favorably. The hire will also be expected to train in BSL3 procedures in order to assist with COVID-19 studies. Other activities include, but are not limited to assisting with RNAseq studies, analysis of the histology and immunostaining of tissue sections to back up the imaging mass cytometry and if possible, CRISPR/Cas9 experience (postdoc can help instruct). Assistance with collection and entry of data in electronic media, daily lab activities and maintenance, as well as purchasing materials and supplies from procurement system will be expected.

Preferred applicants will have a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or a related field, and experience working actively in a research laboratory. Experience in standard cell biology techniques and murine work preferred. Candidates must be able to perform routine laboratory data analysis and research procedures; independently prepare solutions and reagents; perform or learn to work with animal models, and work diligently with attention to detail. The applicant will be trained in surgical techniques, and must be willing to train in BSL3 procedures for COVID-19 research. Must have ability to analyze and organize work procedures; plan and execute tasks or experiments; and interpret and report findings. Above all, applicants should demonstrate, when required, an ability to work a flexible schedule. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel is required. Additional expertise in statistical and data analysis software is a plus. Ideally, we seek an enthusiastic individual who works well with others and has a willingness to learn and take on new challenges.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
