Occupational Summary

Lab Research Analyst needed in the laboratory of Scott Floyd in the Departments of Radiation Oncology/Pharmacology Cancer Biology at Duke University School of Medicine studying epigenetic effects on DNA-damaging cancer therapy using novel organotypic culture models of brain tumors. Additional projects use similar organotypic culture brain models to investigate modifiers of stroke and neurode generative disease.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

€ Conduct a variety of investigations in the planning, development and implementation of experimental procedures and specialized laboratory techniques in the analysis of materials under experimentation.

€ Collect information and data through observation, experimentation, and various other methods, to include operating highly technical laboratory instruments and equipment.

€ Prepare tissue and specimens for complex procedures and devise experimental techniques for tests and analyses. Evaluate and interpret collected data and prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

€ Confer with principal investigator in determining specific experiments to be included in the research protocol and to discuss the interpretation of results.

€ Review journals, abstracts, and scientific literature to keep abreast of new developments and to obtain information regarding previous experiments to aid in the design and development of original procedures and techniques.

€ Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

€ Perform experiments in molecular cloning, cell biology and biochemistry.

€ Perform experiments using ex vivo organotypic culture models of brain and other organs from laboratory mice and rats.

€ Care for laboratory mice and rats

€ Perform basic laboratory mouse experiments with tumor induction, treatment, and measurements.

€ Assist in developing and utilizing technology for analyzing signal transduction in vitro and vivo.

€ Organize experiments and tests by studying project objectives and processes.

€ Document results by maintaining logs; charting data; preparing reports.

€ Maintain an organized and complete laboratory notebook detailing all experiments in electronic formats.

€ Keep project leader/PI informed by pointing all important positive and negative results.

€ Maintain accurate and complete inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents.

€ Keep laboratory stocked by monitoring inventory and responding to requests for materials and reagents.

€ Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.

€ Monitor and maintain laboratory animal resources through efficient experiment scheduling and timely ordering.

€ Assist PI in preparing regulatory documentation for the laboratory.

€ Assist PI in on-boarding of new laboratory personnel, and monitoring of training and other regulatory aspects for existing laboratory personnel.

€ Assist PI in communicating with other laboratories and commercial entities for the exchange of reagents.

€ Supervise, train and instruct residents, interns, students or lower-level personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures.

€ Maintain safe and healthy work environment by complying with regulations and following standards and procedures.

€ Protects organization's value by keeping research information confidential.

€ Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical bulletins.

€ Enhances research and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany,biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.

Experience

Work requires two years of research experience. A related master's OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE degreemay offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience.
