REPORTS TO: Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) Manager

SUPERVISES: Directs the work of one dedicated Human Factors Engineering (HFE)/Human Systems Integration (HSI) Engineer; leads HFE/HSI collaboration across the ILS/Integrated Product Support (IPS) activities throughout all phases in the life cycle of a marine system, including requirements definition, design, development, production, operations, and decommissioning.

AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and maintains strategic partnerships with internal and external customers, stakeholders, and peers.
  • Apply human performance principles, methodologies, and technologies to the design of human-machine systems and products.
  • Develop and implement research methodologies and analysis plans to test and evaluate developmental prototypes used in new products, such as Pilot House hardware designs and the graphical user interfaces found on a ship's bridge.
  • Apply knowledge of military standards (such as MIL-STD-1472 (DoD Design Criteria Standard Human Engineering) and MIL-STD-1474 (DoD Design Criteria Noise Limits) to meet program requirements.
  • Provides the coordination between resource managers/supervisors and ensures all necessary reviews and approvals are received.
  • Complies with Austal USA's employee handbook general guidelines, company procedures and policies.
  • Coordinate across several engineering teams to integrate HE considerations into the overall system design and development.
  • Define system performance requirements to ensure safe and successful human operation of physical, functional and program interfaces for maintainers.

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:
  • PhD in a Human Engineering field (e.g., Human Systems Engineering, Human Factors Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Psychology)
  • 10+ years' experience in the field of human engineering
  • Demonstrated knowledge of U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard shipbuilding specifications such as ABS, Mil, API, and other similar general construction specs required
  • Knowledge of NAVSEA Operations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scheduling, possess an ability to monitor progress to schedule and adhere to strict deadlines required
  • Expert knowledge in Human System Integration (HSI)
  • Ability to define HFE processes for use by human engineering teams
  • Experience in program documentation of the HFE processes and products in a format consistent with US Military Data Item Descriptions (e.g. Human Engineering Program Plan, Human Engineering Design Approach Document - Operator, Human Engineering Design Approach Document - Maintainer, Human Engineering Test Plan, Human Engineering Test Report, et. al)
  • Experience in workload assessments and situation awareness assessments (SAGAT, SART etc.)
  • Experience with the user interface software prototyping tools
  • Experience with Usability software (Morae, Camtasia, etc.)
  • Knowledge in Human Perception and Cognition
  • Experience with Human Performance Modeling
  • Display Design Requirements and Testing Experience
  • Experience in conducting tasks analyses
  • Experience in Agile Development

RESPONSIBILITIES: This position may be required to manage repair efforts in various offsite locations. The potential for offsite travel can potentially be in excess of 40-50%.

LIAISES WITH: ILS Manager, Engineers, Designers, Draftspersons, Production Personnel, Production Control, Supply, Logistics, Regulatory Bodies, Program Management and Equipment Suppliers

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud, + 90 dB.
