Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:

General Description:

The Histology Supervisor is responsible for overseeing Pathology and Histology departments. He or she demonstrates an extensive understanding of laboratory operations and OSHA laboratory regulations. He or she participates in the training and orientation of employees including the promotion of WestPac's mission statement and values of quality in patient care. He or she consistently demonstrates and supervises proper protocol and promotes a professional environment within the laboratory. He or she directly supervisors' staff daily, to ensure accuracy and efficiency. He or she assists with daily troubleshooting problem resolution. He or she creates/updates laboratory procedure and protocol manuals.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Ensure all Federal, State, CAP, HIPAA, CLIA, and Company policies and regulations are adhered to by Histology and Pathology teams.
  • Act as a liaison to maintain communication between departments, Pathologists and with the Director of Operations.
  • Collaborate with Pathology and Histology teams to promote Medical Leadership.
  • Act as the primary contact to provide coverage for Histology and Pathology teams in the case of absences, as necessary.
  • Report any workplace accidents or injuries to Safety Officer, Human Resources, or Director of Operations immediately.
  • Capable of performing all laboratory responsibilities on an as needed basis, including Grossing, Histotechnician and Lab Assistant duties.
  • Maintain and update department policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate department workflow for efficiency and make appropriate changes as needed.
  • Work closely with Client Services and Logistics on client/patient issues and courier route changes to ensure a high level of client service from the laboratory.
  • Work closely with the Pathology Lead and Histology Lead to evaluate their roles and develop their positions.
  • Assist Leads with supply ordering, receiving and inventory, as needed.
  • Complete CAP proficiency testing.
  • Perform cost analysis on consumables, reagents, antibodies, etc, as needed.
  • Must carry out the supervisory functions of all staff members including, but not limited to, employee scheduling, performance, appraisals, employee recognition, coaching and disciplinary action.
  • Participation in all annual inspections including, Fire, City of San Luis Obispo, Waste Management, CAP, CLIA, etc.
  • Complete monthly and quarterly Quality Metrics/Reports and participation in Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement initiatives set out for the laboratory, as needed.
  • In addition to typical work schedule, may be scheduled to work weekends, work split shifts, overtime, holidays, and attend mandatory company meetings, as necessary.
  • Other duties may apply, as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Have a strong understanding of administrative, clerical, and management principles.
  • Possess and demonstrate customer and personal service skills.
  • Have knowledge of administrative and clerical systems including word processing, HRIS software, and other business programs.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates.
  • Engage in active listening and critical thinking.
  • Use judgment when determining decisions and courses of action.
  • Demonstrate the ability to engage in oral and written comprehension.
  • Be customer service oriented and possess strong interpersonal skills and maintain a positive and friendly attitude when interacting with patients, clients, and other departments.
  • Demonstrate reliability, responsibility, and dependability.
  • Participate in active listening by giving full attention to what others are saying and taking time to understand the points made.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Minimum five (5) years previous experience as a Histotechnician and or Histotechnologist.
  • Minimum two (2) years previous Immunohistochemical (IHC) stain experience.
  • Certified ASCP Board of Registry HT or HTL.
  • Must have shown capability of above average technical skills and judgment.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • (B.S.) Bachelors of Science degree from four-year college or university preferred.

Travel:
  • Meet applicable company insurance guidelines and release Department of Motor Vehicles driving records if required to drive or operate a company vehicle in the performance of their duties. Must comply with company driving policies and procedures.
  • Participate in occasional travel to interact with Division personnel, attend meetings, or participate in educational training, as needed.
Physical Demands:
  • Have the ability to require lifting and carrying objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Be able to reach, stoop/bend, kneel/crouch, push/pull, and walk.
  • Engage in moderate to frequent computer work.
  • Engage in moderate to frequent use of telephone and fax.
  • Have the ability to see, hear, talk, and respond adequately.
