Finance, Fraud Manager

Finance Team | Location: Santa Clara, CA / Hybrid

About the Role

The Fraud Manager will be a key leader and advisor to Chegg Leaders to manage and mitigate payment fraud, chargeback risks, and platform abuse. Key partners include Information Security, Trust & Safety, Operations, Product, and Engineering teams in addition to Corporate Finance and Accounting teams.

Reporting to the Sr. Manager of Finance, Payments, and part of Chegg's efforts to develop capabilities in global payments and risk mitigation, the Fraud Manager will help enable the right discussions, financial analysis, and actions to fight fraudulent activity.

As Fraud Manager you will actively engage with business stakeholders to build the tools and processes needed to detect and mitigate fraud risks across the fraud lifecycle, from acquisition and conversion, and customer account security, to renewals and chargebacks. The Fraud Manager will have a seat at the table in discussions related to implementing technology, working with third parties and/or internal operations teams, fraud, and chargeback management decision-making for existing and new products in our growing portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop periodic and ad-hoc analyses, including predictive data science models, to identify and mitigate financial risks related to payment methods, account takeovers, chargebacks, and platform abuse.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and provide recommendations based on data, KPIs, and desired financial outcomes, and enable the implementation of related mitigation strategies.
  • Understand and recommend insights to improve fraud rules, scoring, and detection strategies achieving a successful balance of risk mitigation and customer acquisition and experience.
  • Build effective relationships within Finance and business partners in Engineering, Product and Information Security organizations to help ensure successful execution of key portfolio priorities.
  • Interface with third-party vendors, including payment processors, payment gateways, and fraud management technology providers, to ensure adherence to fraud tolerance levels and KPIs.
  • Prioritize and provide a clear line of sight to the most critical work to partners and team members.
  • Ensure financial plans, forecasts, and reporting appropriately reflect fraud and chargeback risks.
  • Continually assess manual and automated processes to identify potential process gaps and opportunities.

Desired Experience and Skills:
  • Advanced degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics or related quantitative discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in Fraud prevention or Business Analytics in a B2C technology, eCommerce, or content/media organization. Experience working with recurring revenue models, i.e., subscriptions or membership, is a plus.
  • Advanced modeling skills in Excel, SQL, Python/R, or equivalent languages, and Tableau or similar business intelligence or data visualization tools.
  • Experience in payments risk management (e.g., fraud mitigation, chargeback management) in a consumer SaaS or eCommerce business model preferred.
  • Solid understanding of how fraud and abuse affect a company's financial performance.
  • Superior critical thinking and intellectual and quantitative analysis capabilities.
  • Strong communication, and interpersonal skills to build relationships and influence stakeholders.
The pay range for this position is $130,420 to $242,208. The actual pay will vary based on geographic location, job requirements, professional experience, and other factors.
