Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Environmental Services Supervisor provides excellent customer service, demonstrates an understanding of the department and Eskenazi Health's service standards and strives to achieve them, treats patients, families, and co-workers with dignity and respect, and displays cohesive teamwork abilities. The Supervisor also demonstrates the desire and initiative to pursue learning in order to enhance skills, optimizes use of resources to provide quality service and seeks out ways to improve productivity and patient satisfaction.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County; models Eskenazi values
  • Assists the Environmental Services (EVS) Manager in maintaining a high quality standard of housekeeping by keeping him/her informed of the immediate condition of all assigned areas and by training, supervising and motivating EVS personnel to ensure that all schedules are completed
  • Inspects patient rooms and releases for the next admission only when the rooms have met the required standards; uploads each inspection to SharePoint
  • Maintains a basic understanding of the assigned area and the control of all supplies and equipment used in the EVS department
  • Monitors assigned areas continuously to ensure work is being done according to standards and personnel are following established schedules
  • Reports all pertinent information to the Operations Manager
  • Provides instruction to various groups of adult learners within the EVS department (continuing education, skills training, annual competencies, etc)
  • Participates in self-assessment and peer review programs, and continuing education activities
  • Arranges for assigned areas to have adequate coverage at all times by checking sign-in sheets and placing personnel efficiently
  • Maintains age and job-specific competencies as described by departments, areas and units
  • Provides assistance in special job-related assignments as required
  • Conducts and participates in daily bed huddles with direct reports and fellow supervisors to share and pass on vital information that pertains to the department and/or facility such as: census, assigned areas, special projects and other information that needs to be shared

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Three years of Environmental Services, janitorial or related experience may be accepted in lieu of high school diploma
  • Two years of Environmental Services, janitorial or related experience required with completion of high school diploma
  • One year of experience in a supervisory capacity

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of schedules for all assigned areas and seeks methods of improvement
  • Ability to handle all requests for housekeeping services in a timely manner
  • Ability to project a positive, service-minded attitude and feeling of pride to the EVS staff by demonstrating personal enthusiasm and team spirit
  • Ability to answer the phone courteously and in accordance with established procedure
  • Ability to record call information
  • Ability to maintain good public relations with all patients, visitors and employees
  • Ability to maintain high standards of personal appearance among EVS staff
  • Skills in use of floor machine/buffer, carpet extractor, furniture moving equipment and trash compactor
  • Displays ability to supervise, effective communication skills (oral/written), and flexibility in work routine
  • Knowledge of EVS and Eskenazi Health methods and procedures
  • Ability to use tact, courtesy in interpersonal communications, and age appropriate communication skills
  • Ability to work mandatory overtime when requested
