A DAY IN THE LIFE

Enthalpy Analytical, is part of the larger organization, Montrose Environmental Group, is comprised of over 9 laboratories servicing air, water, soil, and toxicology testing. Regulations drive the need for our services, but our unique capabilities allow us to add value to clients beyond environmental compliance.

As a key member of the laboratory team, Group Leaders lead a well-trained and informed staff to meet the expectations of our clients by efficiently and profitably generating defensible data on time. Our Group Leader will be a working leader who is responsible for most aspects of an operating team within the lab, this role will be responsible for a full range of activities including:
  • Leader of the High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) group - Reports to the Technical Director
  • Along with senior lab leadership, assist in final steps of establishing the group's setup, qualifying the group's technologies and capabilities, and developing workflows
  • Working with the Technical Director and QA Dept to acquire 3rd party certification from NELAC, DoD, and ISO17025 for relevant technologies and methods
  • Management of both Preparatory and Analytical processes within the group
  • Maintaining communication with regulating bodies to understand upcoming statutory and technological changes, such as participation in EPA working groups
  • Work with Sales and Marketing teams to develop awareness of HRMS group and its capabilities
  • Personnel supervision, time management, and operational efficiency
  • Hiring, firing, and disciplinary actions
  • Conflict resolution, personnel skills development and team building
  • Accurate and timely communication with internal and external clients
  • Project scheduling
  • Analyze samples as needed by using various published methods such as EPA Methods 23, OTM-46, SW846-8290, 1613B and CARB 428
  • Development of analytical methods including those requiring new technologies
  • Preparation of data summaries for inclusion in client reports.
  • Sample and Standard Preparation as needed
  • Instrument calibration and maintenance including logbook and record updates
  • Troubleshooting and problem solving
  • Write and assist the QA Director with updating related SOPs
  • Maintain adequate consumables and parts for analyses
  • Maintaining organized records of sample preparation and analysis and equipment maintenance
  • Initiate and address non-conformance issues
  • Implement overhead projects designed to improve efficiency or accuracy of analyses
  • Comply with Enthalpy's Quality Assurance Program and other policies
  • Other duties as assigned by the Lab Supervisor or Lab Director
  • Ensure staff comply with Enthalpy's Health and Safety Plan
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
YOUR EXPERTISE & SKILLS
To perform this job successfully, individuals must be able to perform each duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience working in a lab - Graduate level research experience will be considered
  • Working, applicable knowledge of high-resolution mass spectrometry theory and hands-on HRMS instrument experience
    • Waters Autospec experience is a plus
    • GCMS/MS (QQQ) experience is a plus
  • Experience in analysis and preparation of environmental dioxin/furan samples is highly preferred
  • Understanding of physical and chemical principles underlying published procedures each method with which they work.
  • Group Leaders must be well versed in most of the methods run within their department
  • They must have shown the ability to organize, communicate, and facilitate priorities to staff in an effective manner
  • They must be able to handle non-routine samples and be capable of managing an effective workflow in their department (this includes managing man-hours, machine time and logistics for numerous assays)
  • Proficient with Google and Microsoft office Suite products (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Experience with Workday preferred
