The School of Medicine's Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Research Services Entry Laboratory Science Professional.

Jobs in the Research Services career family provide direct professional support of research activities. Functions include human subject compliance, research laboratory coordination and instruction, environmental health and safety, hazardous materials use, disposal and training.

Professionals at the entry level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.

At the entry level, duties are limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from the Laboratory Coordinator (Megan Stern) and Clinical Research Laboratory Manager (Kathleen Waugh) and are performed in a training and development capacity.

Nature of Work

Entry Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in a Clinical Research Laboratory and handle a variety of biological specimen hazards. Entry Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are processed, tested, analyzed and stored.

This Entry Laboratory Science Professional will be supporting multiple clinical research studies: "The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young" (TEDDY), "Diabetic Autoimmunity Study in the Young" (DAISY) "Autoimmunity Screening for Kids" (ASK) and Trial of Early Initiation of CGM-Guided Insulin Therapy in Stage 2 T1D (TESS). DAISY and TEDDY have identified newborns with genetic variants that place them at high risk for developing Type 1 Diabetes (childhood). Infants with the high-risk genetic variants have been invited to participate in the study that includes multiple detailed data collection visits for at least 4 years, with the hope of following the established cohort for 15-20 years. ASK is a screening program for children 2-18 yrs of age, identifying autoantibodies related to type 1 diabetes and celiac disease. TESS is conducting randomized controlled trials of intensive follow-up for already- identified stage 2 T1D participants utilizing continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology to monitor changes in glycemic profile, provide early education for families around factors impacting blood glucose levels, and guide early insulin therapy.

This position is a part of the clinical research team that has recruited identified high-risk newborns and children into the studies, collects extensive clinical and laboratory data, and conducts ongoing case management/follow-up of the cohort. There is a study steering committee and data monitoring board that reviews and approves study protocols, as well as local IRBs that will also approve the study protocols.

Examples of Duties Performed
    Collaborate with and support study coordinators and managers, clinic and data teams, and Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects Process biological samples for clinical research analysis: blood centrifugation, preparation, storage, and shipping of plasma, serum, red blood cells, white blood cells, saliva, urine, viral and bacterial culture specimens Conduct analysis of biological samples to answer research questions: hemoglobin A1C analysis, urine ketone and glucose levels, blood glucose levels Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting and communicating results Perform pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical test process and evaluate results produced Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials and other items as needed Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information Provide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit and related issues Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs Assist with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required

    Administration of patient interviews and assessments Participate in local and central training sessions as required

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $40,280 - 51,236.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
    Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis

Preferred Qualifications
    Prior experience or coursework background within a clinical research lab or an experimental or wet lab Basic database updating and data entry experience
