The Office of the Dean for the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is the administrative office directly responsible for guiding, coordinating and applying academic, financial and human resources policies for the many departments, schools and programs housed within CAHSS.

Position Summary

The Business Officer provides college-level accounting, budget, human resources and business practices support to the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The position reports to the Director of Business and Operations and serves to support the unit's leadership team. The Business Officer is responsible for working with the Director of Business and Operations to manage the business systems and the day-to-day financial transactions for CAHSS. It also provides support to the Director of Business and Operations in managing the human resources functions of the unit. This position will also work closely with CAHSS departments, including faculty and staff, on the budget process while also monitoring financial reports to work through issues to support divisional financial priorities. Departmental support also includes a role in managing the processing of day-to-day financial transactions, tracking expenses, and review of department funds during staff vacancies. The ideal candidate will have proven business acumen and the ability to oversee assigned financial and operational projects, and display innovative thinking in business systems implementation and management.

Essential Functions

Business Management and Reporting

  • Develop and manage systems for reviewing expenditures, keeping DU and CAHSS compliance and best practices in mind, as well as ad hoc requests from Director of Business and Operations. This includes developing and managing complex budget tracking spreadsheets to accurately assess current budget conditions throughout the fiscal year.
  • Establish new CAHSS financial guidelines and communicate out to departments as necessary.
  • Assist with collection and analysis of enrollment data, graduate financial aid, departmental expenses, and other areas as directed by Director of Business and Operations, or other unit leadership.
  • Analyze complex business operations and financial statements and provide information to divisional and departmental leaders to make recommendations and decisions.
  • Provide monthly reporting and updates to appropriate personnel with budgetary management responsibility.
  • Provide support to Director of Business and Operations in the budgetary planning and forecasting process.
  • Organize and manage annual department budget planning meetings and quarterly department budget check-ins with all 20 CAHSS departments.
  • Provide ongoing financial and operational support and training to all departments as needed and act as liaison between departments and Shared Services, Procurement, and the Controller's Office.
  • Establish and oversee CAHSS funds, including awards, gifts, endowments, and gainshare as well as perform monthly audits of all the funds.
  • Process graduate financial aid entries in consultation with the Director of Graduate Recruitment and Admissions, perform multiple financial aid audits, and provide support to departmental staff in this area including endowment and gift funds used for scholarships
  • Provide financial, operational, and human resources support to departments during staff vacancies.
  • Provide individual onboarding and training to new staff in departments including training on DU financial policies, procedures, and expense management software.
  • Oversee the CAHSS computer procurement process including approvals, budgets, funding, and inventory management.
  • Manage and oversee funding and reimbursements of Dean's Office funds to departments and projects and prepare all journal entries for completion.
  • Oversee all budget transactions for CAHSS programs and initiatives which do not have dedicated staff support.
  • Manage CAHSS financial workflow items for approval.
  • Create and deliver annual year-end training to CAHSS departments to ensure CAHSS compliance with year-end policies and procedures.
  • Provide top-level budget review for over 500 funds and sub-departments including an in-depth year-end review that includes daily oversight and reconciling deficits and discrepancies.
Transactional and Fund Oversight
  • Process budget transfers, check requests, purchase order requisitions, journal entries, contracts, and account balance inquiries.
  • Manage and process the the approval of day to day business transactions in CAHSS and the Deans Office, and work closely with Director of Business and Operations in overseeing procurement, travel, and contracts.
  • Understand, implement, and ensure divisional compliance with all University and CAHSS policies and procedures.
  • Work with departmental budget managers when procurement policy questions arise.
Human Resources Support
  • Provide support in overseeing the HR functions of the unit, including hiring processes and non-benefited hire approvals, position changes, separations and coordination of the college's adjunct faculty hiring.
  • Provide support to the Director of Business in Operations in managing the unit's position portfolio, including working with relevant offices on position descriptions, preparing postings, and assisting departmental staff and leaders during searches.
  • Support the college as needed with researching payroll transactions, preparing HR/payroll reporting for college leadership, coordinating with departmental staff on payroll policies and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to innovate and implement continuous improvement solutions for CAHSS business systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, budget, and interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as budget spreadsheets and other financial documents.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw conclusions, and implement solutions.
  • Proven ability to work with a high level of independence, maintain confidentiality, prioritize assignments and division needs.
Required Qualifications

Level 1:
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2-3 years of experience in business administration or financial management or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Level 2:
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience in business administration or financial management or an equivalent combination of training and experience. At least 2 of those years should include experience working with payroll, human resources processes and financial data.
Preferred Qualifications

Level 1:
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in financial management and analytical work.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Knowledge of Banner, Concur and Kronos.
  • Proficiency in two or more languages.
Level 2:
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • 5 years of experience in financial management and analytical work.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Knowledge of Banner, Concur and Kronos.
  • Proficiency in two or more languages.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend hours.

Salary Grade Number:
  • The salary grade number for Business Officer 1 is 9.

Salary Range:
  • The salary range for Business Officer 1 is $58,000-63,000
  • The salary range for Business Officer 2 is $68,000-75,000
