A.T. Still University (ATSU) is seeking a non-exempt Prospect Development/Business Analyst on the Kirksville, Missouri, campus. The position reports to the Director of Advancement Services. The purpose of this position is to act as a strategic partner to the fundraising team, collaborating with the fundraisers and advancement leadership, to ensure that fundraiser activity is focused on the right prospects at the right time, and to inform and support the organization’s fundraising strategies, goals, and outreach efforts. This will primarily be achieved through:

  • Conducting web-based and print prospect research to identify and qualify prospective donors (individual, corporate, foundation) for major gifts to the University. Using ethically-based industry standards, the prospect researcher will utilize a wide range of biographical, organizational, and financial resources, including web-based subscription database services, Internet websites, and other external sources to identify new prospects and complete donor information requests.
  • Collecting, synthesizing, and analyzing accumulated information to gauge giving interests, assessing giving capacity, evaluating inclination to make philanthropic gifts, confirm affinity, describing connections/relationships with ATSU, and developing and implementing further research strategies.
  • Craft documents using style, grammar, and content appropriate to specific audiences in a clear, concise, but appropriately detailed manner. Interpret and translate multifaceted financial, legal, and corporate language into comprehensible language. Extract and communicate key information. Clearly communicate actionable, complete research results and complete all aspects of documentation and information storage.
  • Developing cultivation and solicitation strategies/plans to aid University Advancement’s (UA) achievement of organizational fundraising goals.

This position will serve all fundraisers at all campus locations. This person must safeguard the confidentiality of donor information at all times and adhere to ethical and confidentiality guidelines established by University Advancement. This person must also maintain the professional and ethical standards set forth by the Association of Prospect Researchers for Advancement (APRA) to ensure that all activities performed are legal, ethical, and appropriate for the University.

This position will also support reporting and online giving business processes as follows (see Major Job Duties for detail):
  • Reporting: Develop and fulfill ad hoc data and report requests for mailings, appeals, regular bi-monthly alumni download, and event invitation lists, demographic analysis, key performance indicators, and other requests.
  • Online giving: This position will act as primary staff support for our online giving platform.

Major Job Duties
  • Prospect identification and research:
    • Identification and pipeline: Proactively and independently plan and execute activities to identify and ensure a steady flow of new sources of major gift support for qualification and discovery visits; craft strategies for identifying and acquiring new major gift prospects to facilitate the growth of the prospect pool and ensure sufficient prospects to meet UA fundraising goals. Proactively identify, research, and deliver information needed to further our fundraising activities. Develop and execute strategies to achieve prospect entry into the prospect pipeline and timely assignment to fundraisers.
    • Qualification: Qualify major gift prospects by researching and analyzing individuals and organizations for connections/relationships, and for giving capacity and propensity.
    • Strategic collaboration: Recommend cultivation and solicitation strategies based on evaluation of prior and current research and internal information.
    • Build relationships with donor-facing team members (major gifts, annual fund, leadership giving) to understand their research and information needs.
    • Wealth assessment: Research qualified major gift prospects and current donors for indicators of wealth, inclination to give to ATSU, affinity, philanthropic interests and trends, biographical information, and other strategic information that will further the cultivation process.
    • Reporting: Evaluate fundraiser information needs and determine the content of written reports and briefings based on prospect stage, relationship status, and cultivation strategy. Create briefing materials for donor meetings and events.
    • Alerts: Maintain the electronic prospect alert program for key search terms and top prospects; notify relevant staff as to new information, including relationship managers, database staff, and document imaging staff.
  • Relationship management:
    • Daily review: Monitor daily the contacts filed by the fundraising team, assessing the need for action (step type changes, status changes, capacity updates, new proposal creation) and completing database edits and action steps in a timely manner.
    • Weekly review/reporting: Generate the custom fundraiser activity report and distribute to staff.
    • Database-related tasks: Maintain prospect research area of Talisma Fundraising as needed, based on research activities, to track and store relevant data. This includes tracking and reporting fundraiser activity with donors and prospective donors, and any other relevant constituent pool, and making recommendations to enhance and influence fundraiser and campaign activity.
    • Wealth and other indicators: Maintain prospect intelligence, including ratings, interests, relationships, financial data, and biographical information in within the available fundraising databases.
    • Portfolio management: Collaborate and consult with the fundraising team for development of portfolio size and composition, solicitation strategy formulation, and predictive and wealth screening information gathering.
  • Prospect data analysis:
    • Identify, understand, condense, and analyze internal and external data to support data-driven prospect development for the organization.
    • Demonstrate initiative in identifying new sources of information as they become available and forecast the trajectory of the organization’s prospect information needs.
    • Data mining: Interpret results and provide direction on the segmentation and management of the prospect and donor pool via internal data review and vendor screening methods.
    • Resource management: Manage the prospect research information resources, including the identification and selection of appropriate electronic and hard copy sources.
  • Commitment to learning: Stay current on industry trends through relevant and regular publication review, communicating with professional colleagues and report regularly to the advancement team. This position is responsible in particular for a quarterly review of APRA Connections, acting as primary liaison with APRA International, monitoring and sharing key trends from the PRSPCT-L listserve, and acting as liaison with APRA MO-Kan and APRA-IL.
  • Reporting: Develop and fulfill ad hoc data and report requests for mailings, appeals, regular bi-monthly alumni download, and event invitation lists, demographic analysis, key performance indicators, and other requests.
    • Participate in thorough testing and validation efforts ensuring timely and accurate results.
    • Produce and support the production of standard, custom, and multi-area reports utilizing database, ResearchPoint, and any related systems.
    • Fulfill business requirements for gathering, analyzing, and clearly communicating data findings to relevant stakeholders.
    • Design, create, and maintain application and business process-related documentation and operating procedures.
  • Online giving: This position will act as primary staff support for our online giving platform, as follows:
    • With the advancement services team, provide platform implementation support.
    • At the direction of the director of the annual fund or responsible party, create and maintain pages for multiple, concurrent online fundraising portions of overall annual giving campaigns.
    • Test and ensure online giving forms are functioning as expected.
    • Liaison with ITS and communications and marketing for creating and implementing short/friendly URL redirect links.
    • Work with director of the annual fund, or responsible party, and communications and marketing to create customized branding for forms.
    • Create and run reports relative to giving data coming back through the platform (open and click-through rates, conversion statistics, progress-to-goal for multiple appeals and campaigns).
    • Load off-line gifts as needed when utilizing progress-to-goal functions.
  • As indicated, conduct a thorough financial assessment of a prospect's asset information to prepare the solicitation team for a philanthropic gift ask; prepare detailed written reports documenting the information gathering and assessment process.
  • Identify sources of corporation and foundation support by researching corporations and foundations whose mission and funding priorities match the University’s funding initiatives; prepare detailed written reports to inform the corporate and foundation fundraising program.
  • Wealth screening: Coordinate wealth screening activities and data validation post-screening; coordinate use of ResearchPoint and related tools to store information as well as integration with fundraising database.
  • Event briefs: Prepare information needed for University leadership attendance at donor and alumni engagement/recognition events.
  • Develop, maintain, and update prospect research policies and procedures as needed.
  • Special information requests from University leadership (President, deans, program chairs, Board of Trustees, department chairs): As indicated, prepare strategic information needed for donor and alumni engagement activities that are related to Advancement.
  • Campaign preparation: Work with Advancement leadership to identify prospects and deliver information to drive various campaigns (capital, comprehensive, focused).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills/Requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate complex ideas clearly, accurately, and concisely.
  • Specific and demonstrable knowledge of computer software programs such as Microsoft Office suite, including working knowledge of Excel.
  • Proficiency with internet databases, search engines, and basic Internet research, particularly using a Lexis Nexis product.
  • Strong, demonstrable analytical skills, including the ability to analyze and interpret business and financial data, as well as real estate data.
