Summary of the group:

The Biopharmaceutical Development (BPD) group is a multi-disciplinary scientific function providing expertise in process/analytical/formulation/devices development and characterization with integrated bioprocess engineering, clinical manufacturing, and supply chain and logistics operations. The group is also responsible for transferring the processes to different commercial sites in and outside the AstraZeneca organization. BPD is present in multiple sites including Gaithersburg, MD and Cambridge UK.

The Cell Culture and Fermentation Sciences (CCFS) Group is accountable for designing, developing, optimizing, and validating cell culture and fermentation processes for a wide range of biologic products. The group generates optimal cell lines and is also responsible for technology transfers into manufacturing and preparing CMC documentation for regulatory submissions. Cutting edge high throughput scale-down models are employed to develop high-performing media and processes to support production. The group actively implements novel technologies, including automation and analytics, to advance production platform capabilities and drive forward a diverse exciting project portfolio.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

This position within Cell Culture and Fermentation Sciences will involve a substantial amount of hands on cell culture work to develop, scale up, and characterize mammalian culture processes. Major responsibilities include:

  • Design and execute shake flask and small-scale bioreactor experiments to support process development, including media/feed optimization and scale up/scale down modelling.
  • Perform analytical testing to characterize mammalian cells.
  • Perform technical transfer activities and manufacturing support for the clinical/commercial process.
  • Make detailed observations, analyze data, and interpret results to contribute to "go/no go" decisions and convey these findings effectively in laboratory notebooks, technical reports, and presentations.
  • Participate in various cross-functional technology development and pipeline teams, demonstrating a strong ability to collaborate and communicate with others.
  • Present at internal departmental and cross-functional meetings; may participate in/present at external scientific meetings. Must also contribute to scientific publications, patents, and regulatory submissions.

Education & Experience Requirements:

Education:Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, or related field.


Associate scientist: Bachelor's or Master's degree with 0+ years of experience

Scientist: Bachelor's degree with 5+ years or Master's degree with 2+ years of related experience in industry or academia

Required Skills:
  • Strong background in bioprocessing, including familiarity with the basics of bioreactor characterization (liquid-liquid mixing and gas-liquid mass transfer) and harvest development (tangential flow filtration, centrifugation, and depth filtration)
  • Strong background in experimental design, statistical analysis, and process modelling
  • Ability to work both independently and within teams
  • Ability to multitask and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Aseptic technique
  • Cell culture activities may require periodic weekend work.

Desired Skills:
  • Candidates with prior experience with bioprocessing and mammalian bioreactors will be preferred
  • Strong background in cell metabolism
  • Programming in Python, MATLAB, R, or other scientific language
