The Asbestos and Hazardous Material Coordinator reports to the Environmental Compliance Manager of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and the Senior Director of Engineering and Infrastructure of Facilities Design and Construction (FDC) while providing direct support to OSU's FDC team. This team member is expected to provide guidance and support to university construction and renovation projects.
Job Description Details:
The Asbestos and Hazardous Material Coordinator will work with the Facilities Design and Construction Team to ensure safe proper and compliant management of hazardous building materials in construction and renovation projects. The asbestos and hazardous material coordinator will provide asbestos/hazardous materials consultation, including the performance of risk assessments, compliance assessments, quality audits, safety compliance audits, and asbestos program coordination and inspections for university projects. Specific tasks may include:
Develop abatement plans, review construction documents, develop building design standards, perform studies, and represent EHS/FDC with internal and external constituencies.
Provide notifications to building and area occupants prior to abatement in their area and will provide support in any emergency abatement situations.
Perform preliminary asbestos hazard assessments in conjunction with EHS and utilize Asbestos Response Decision Tree and Asbestos Hazard Assessment Forms.
Utilize student resources to accomplish job tasks. Train and provide oversight to student assistants as needed to complete work.
Participate in the Facilities Design and Construction department Culture of Safety Team.
Conduct site safety inspections for compliance to EPA, OSHA and OSU building design standards.
Participate as a member of the EHS Emergency Response team. Provide project support in emergency abatement situations.
Participate in the university medical surveillance program This includes completing a physical and fit testing for respirator use. This is a condition of employment.
Support FDC by ensuring project teams have appropriate training and knowledge to maintain compliance with applicable regulations.
Workplace assignment will be within Facilities Design and Construction. May be required for 24 emergency call. Will require successful completion of a criminal background check. Will participate as a member of the Environmental Health and Safety Emergency Response Team.
Required Qualifications:
Experience in asbestos-related inspections (bulk and air sampling), assessments, preparation of sampling reports, preparation of abatement project design and specifications, third-party monitoring of abatement projects, and review of closeout documentation. Experience in Asbestos abatement project design. Considerable experience in construction projects and knowledge of mechanical/electrical/plumbing engineering principles.
Ability to review detailed architectural and engineering drawings and specification documents.
Current State of Ohio asbestos credentials (Asbestos Hazard Evaluation Specialist, Asbestos Hazard Abatement Specialist, Asbestos Project Designer, Bulk Sample Analysis and Air Sample Analysis). These licenses/certifications are a condition of employment.
Minimum Education Required
Bachelor's Degree of science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum Experience Required
4 years of experience in EHS compliance with a focus on hazardous material management. Current State of Ohio asbestos credentials (Asbestos Hazard Evaluation Specialist, Asbestos Project Designer,and Air Sample Analysis). These licenses/certifications are a condition of employment.
Desired Qualifications
5 years of experience in occupational safety including general knowledge of environmental, safety, industrial hygiene, fire and OSHA standard/codes/rules. Knowledge of American Society of Mechanical Engineers Standards (ASME), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Ohio Building Code (OBC), and other regulatory agency requirements.
Knowledge of governmental and institution occupational safety regulations. Knowledge of employee occupational health requirements, environmental protection requirements, and worker industrial hygiene.
Completion and maintenance an initial 40-hr Asbestos Abatement Contractor/Supervisor Training Course at EPA licensed training provider and maintain on an annual basis.
NIOSH 582 Equivalency training. Ohio EPA certified Asbestos Hazard Abatement Specialist.
Additional Information:The target hiring range for this job profile is $ $74,900 - 98,500 . The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limited to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
