In this role we are looking for an energetic Applications Scientist in support of our x-ray diffraction and related product lines. Thin film applications (including high resolution epitaxial) will be the primary area of expertise sought, but you will be expected to support a broad range of x-ray scattering applications. What are your responsibilities?

  • Provide technical support to customers for application of our systems, addressing queries and providing advice as necessary to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Provide technical knowledge of X-ray diffraction/ scattering to customers during the buyers journey; Give technical presentations, advise on hardware considerations, software analysis capabilities and training requirements.
  • Provide sample analysis in the form of written and oral reports
  • Demonstrate system usage, either remotely, at customer sites or Malvern Panalytical sites in the region.
  • Provide expertise and training services for new or existing customers, either virtually, at customer sites or in classroom settings.
  • Support other key Malvern Panalytical departments such as product development, marketing, R&D and EH&S; provide feedback from customers, develop new marketing materials, test new products, maintain all chemical records and risk assessments including for customer samples.
  • Comply with the Malvern Panalytical code of business ethics, business practices and procedures.
  • Comply with all Malvern Panalytical applications department policies
  • Position will be home-office based, but with frequent (>25%) commuting to MP-lab in Westborough, MA.
  • This role is expected to require up to 50% overnight travel

What do you need to be successful in this role?
  • Ph.D. in Physical Sciences, Engineering, Materials Science, or other scientific disciplines is preferred. Other college degrees will be considered with sufficient relevant experience.
  • Previous laboratory experience is essential: Minimum of 3 years' direct industrial and/or academic experience, working in a research, development, or laboratory setting.
  • 3+ years' experience with XRD as system owner or advanced user required
  • Must have experience with thin film XRD analysis.
  • Willingness to learn other advanced XRD techniques such as SAXS, powder diffraction and PDF
  • A strong desire to aim high, take ownership and be true to yourself, our customers and colleagues.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Must be fluent in English.
  • Must have US work authorization
  • Must be willing to relocate to Westborough, MA area.

Great to have?
  • Experience in thin film deposition and fabrication environments
  • High-Resolution XRD analysis (epitaxial thin films)
  • Experience in a technical/commercial role and/or sales support role is ideal.
  • Experience in quality control environment is highly beneficial.
  • Experience in typical Malvern Panalytical market sectors would be advantageous.
  • Experience and direct knowledge of other Malvern Panalytical Technologies (e.g. XRF, other XRD applications) is preferred, but not a requirement.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in competitive or orthogonal analytical techniques such as HRTEM, ellipsometry, SIMS, etc. would be beneficial.
