Position Summary

The Apheresis Registered Nurse, Cancer Center (GWCC) performs cell collections and therapeutic apheresis procedures for adult patients, related donors, and volunteer research subjects in an outpatient setting. This role provides patient-centric care and is primarily responsible for nursing assessment and diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assesses patient/donor medical history and clinical condition for procedural concerns, risks, and contraindications to apheresis.
  • Performs donor screenings and reviews donor health history questionnaires, justifications, and other related documentation before collection, according to SOPs and regulatory guides.
  • Educates patients, families, and caregivers on disease processes, treatment, side effects, and symptom management
  • Monitors the patient/donor response to the procedure and makes technical and medication changes appropriately and per protocol.
  • Communicates with medical provider teams and Apheresis Medical Directors to address potential and immediate clinical concerns.
  • Coordinates with the interdisciplinary team to ensure continuity of care.
  • Processes apheresis products, including labeling and delivery in compliance with regulatory documentation.
  • Adheres to unit policies and procedures compliant with regulatory requirements documentation; follows FDA, FACT, CAP, and other regulatory requirements and guidance.
  • Functions as a leader: responsible for daily workflow management, staff assignments, scheduling changes, environmental safety, and interfacing with other departments.
  • Assist in policy and procedure development, review, revision, and implementation.
  • Continuously evaluates patient/donor for procedure reactions and initiates any additional medical treatment in accordance with physician's orders.
  • Obtains orders and assures that proper consent forms are completed prior to the procedure.
  • Assesses vascular access for adequacy for the procedure and the possible need for a vascular access device.
  • Interviews prospective apheresis donors and determines suitability for donation based on SOPs and regulatory guidelines.
  • Documents patient's physical and emotional status in order to address patient needs appropriately.
  • Performs Autologous blood collection and Therapeutic Phlebotomy procedures demonstrating phlebotomy skills.
  • Performs therapeutic/donor apheresis which may include:
    • Plasma exchange, therapeutic cytapheresis, stem cell collection, photopheresis, red cell exchange, LDL Apheresis, and allogeneic blood component collections (future state).
  • Properly assembles and prepares equipment for all patient/donor procedures in accordance with established SOPs. Collects and records initial and follow-up lab data.
  • Properly operates blood processing equipment in accordance with written SOPs. Completes all documentation.
  • Coordinates care with other members of the health care team. Integrates research, evidence-based practice, and professional standards into clinical practice.
Qualifications

Education
  • Associate's degree in Nursing or higher from an accredited program is required.
  • Current DC license as a Registered Nurse is required.
  • Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card or equivalent is required.
Experience
  • A minimum of 1 year of RN experience in the acute care setting.
  • 2 or more years of Hematology/Oncology/BMT, Critical Care, or Blood Bank experience is preferred.
