The Office of Environmental Health and Safety is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a full-time position of Administrative Coordinator (Dosimetry Program) within the Radiation Safety Program. The Dosimetry Program Coordinator will work under the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer and will be responsible for administering the University of Virginia's radiation dosimetry program. This program provides radiation dosimeters to radiation workers in accordance with University radiation safety policy and radioactive materials license.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to safety in the workplace, as well as have strong communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills. Candidates will be required to work Monday - Friday 8am-5pm.

Responsibilities include:

  • Review applications and assign dosimeters to individuals, as necessary.
  • Determine type of dosimetry based upon information on dosimetry application form.
  • Physically distribute and collect dosimetry badges from various academic and medical center departments, enter into a third-party database for determining radiation doses.
  • Maintain Virginia mandated dosimetry records for all Radiation Users at UVa.
  • Respond to request for dosimetry from other institutions, this requires retrieving files, and mailing required information.
  • Distribute annual dose reports to individuals as per Virginia regulations.
  • Communicate with departments concerning dosimetry issues and problems.
  • Inform users of prenatal exposure risks.
  • Obtain exposure records from previous employers.
  • Coordinate billing for monthly and quarterly invoices and all unreturned radiation dosimetry badges.
  • Train EHS-Radiation Safety Program personnel to assist with program.
  • Support the ongoing operations, including special projects of the organization. Perform a variety of duties requiring an understanding of organizational operations, procedures, and personnel.
  • For general administrative support, may answer phones, open mail, prepare correspondence, maintain calendars, and schedule meetings.
  • May coordinate activities with internal and external customers, arrange meetings and special events, and maintain records.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
  • May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma required. Associates Degree in Science preferred.

Experience: At least one year of general work experience required. Experience in the Radiation Safety field and working in a Radiation Safety Program at major medical or research institutions is preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have excellent organizational skills necessary for proper maintenance of program and associated recordkeeping requirements,
  • Computer skills necessary for various forms, documents and database management.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate and write effectively, facilitating interaction with other employees with a focus on customer service.
  • Ability to maintain files.
  • Ability to adhere to confidential handling of sensitive information.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
  • Problem solving skills

Computer Applications: Computer skills, both Microsoft Office, Database application and Radiation Safety data management program such as "HP Assistant" is preferred.

Licenses or Certification: A valid unrestricted Driver's License or the ability to obtain a Virginia Driver's License within 90 days of employment is required.

Working Conditions and Exposures: Required to walk through radiation use areas, laboratories and patient areas in the Medical Center.

Physical Demands: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of computers, using the telephone, filing and other mandated paperwork. It will also require extensive periods of time walking, climbing stairs and standing.

Immunization Requirement: Employees will be required to comply with the Health System's immunization policy - OCH-002: Occupational Health Screening and Maintenance.

Successful candidates will work well independently and in a team environment, be highly reliable, and have the ability to communicate and act professionally with all members of the University Community. Anticipated Hiring Range: Up to $40,000 with UVA benefits, commensurate with candidates experience and qualifications.
